When does he first show up physically and not just by name - probably after the series had become a huge sensation.

even his name didn't show up until after it was wildly popular

He's first mentioned in the Draco's detour chapter of HBP.

In what way? I've heard plenty of people discuss how horrible he was/that he's a metaphor or AIDS/that he's a child molester/etc. etc. etc.

There's not a lot to wank about with Greyback. He's depicted as an extremely creepy, disturbed person who does terrible things and doesn't have any redemptive value. There's not a lot of room for interpretation there and there's no gray morality.

I've seen some discussion about how he makes the "werewolves as a metaphor for AIDS" thing really disturbing (which I happen to agree with). That's about it.

I think that would be more disturbing if he were the only werewolf we see.

I can see that argument. I think some people are just more sensitive to these sorts of implications and I'm one of them.

But there have been men who have intentionally passed along AIDS to sex partners without disclosure, so it's not unrealistic. Obviously, Lupin represents the majority of people with AIDS who work hard to keep it under control and are careful about not passing it along, but I think it's kind of interesting to also depict the darker side of things as well.

:O haven't heard that. Any links explaining that theory?

I've been trying to find a transcript or at least a press clipping for the interview where JKR said that she meant werewolves as a metaphor for how people respond to HIV, but all I can find is wikis stating that she said it connected to broken links. So you can probably take my word for it as easily as theirs. I did find a blog post discussing the metaphor.

Luckily, Fenrirwives never really took off.

A fact for which we can thank God. Seriously, his scenes with Hermione were always creepy. Like, something was wrong (besides the obvious situation) but it was always juuuuuuust below the surface. It made him a shade darker than the other Death Eaters (at least to me).

agreed. and holy hell, Fenrirwives would have been just...even for fandom, just...I mean Snapewives is one things, but really, /shudder

I was going to make some crack post about how he's kinda of the anti-Lupin (same circumstances, opposite end of the morality spectrum, etc.).

But then I went to say something about his name, spelled 'Lupin' backwards, and couldn't take myself seriously anymore.

I am a child.

Hahaha. Thanks for that. :)

I'd be really curious what you thought she was implying with him, OP, and why you think people ought to be upset about it.

I mean, I read Greyback as a monster. An animalistic predator who was canny enough to try to make werewolf persecution everyone's problem and not a minority issue. It reminded me a little of Magneto's plan in the first X-Men movie to turn prominent world leaders into mutants.

He's a metaphor for child molestation, is creepy as fuck, was always intended as such, and was always taken as such. Really, the only controversy is why was he so overlooked in the movies? (My answer--he was way too creepy for the movies. Remember, they nixed Pettigrew's eventual fate because they deemed it way too disturbing that PP *strangle* himself.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
People talk about Greyback and how he's basically a pedophile really often on fandom.
