But, if you are making a fanmix you tend to use songs/artists you know. And those are generally popular artists that everyone else knows.

True. I just think people should expand their musical horizons. (says the person who has listened to the same five Decemberists albums on repeat for days straight)

See I look at it from this perspective... I generally make fanmixes from smaller/more unpopular fandoms (video games and books). I post them to larger fanmix communities and competitions. If there isn't something there to "grab" the person... like an artist they like... then they aren't likely to give the rest of it a shot.

This. I have a few mixes with almost only Indie songs (because they happened to fit and that's the kind of music I listen to the most) but almost nobody likes those mixes - whereas the mixes with the same-old-same-old are the popular ones.

driveby Decemberists appreciation! I have definitely suggested making Decemberists-only fanmixes before now. Throw in a little Tarkio or something for some variety?

Their albums are so well organized, with great openings, rising action, climaxes, ramping down and closers, that I take inspiration just from their organizational skills. My favorite albums all have great flow from one song to another. I've only heard one Tarkio song, but I should listen to more. I feel like the Decemberists are very popular, but I don't think they actually are? I'm not sure.
