Case in point, as I was writing this post to talk about how WTF it was that the U.S. managed to score within a few minutes of their game against Ghana, Ghana scored and now it's 1-1. \o/

Also, the stadium lights went out for a minute?

ETA: US scores within a few minutes, then like an hour of no gain for anyone, then both score within like 5 minutes. WTF is going on with this game?

Erm.

Sorry.

I have the US game on.

E: More general thoughts - this US performance has been disappointing, in terms of the lack of ambition shown on the attack (even though there's obviously good reason for it) but in some ways the amount of initiative they've shown when they are on the attack has actually surprised me, they've been much more capable than I anticipated.

Also, while I'm not glad he got injured, per se, I think the US team is better with Altidore not playing.

I'm watching this in my school's cafeteria, and it's the last of the finals. Everyone just exploded when the US scored again, and there's this guy wearing a US flag as a cape, very obviously a big soccer fan. Normally I'd find it obnoxious and I feel like I should, but right now it's honestly just adorable.

ETA: WE WOOOOOOOOONNNNN! :D

WOOOOOOOOOOO! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

*ahem*

Good game, yes, well done everyone.

Yeah, there's something about the World Cup, it's just fun, especially when you're with a good crowd.

I am usually not a soccer/football fan at all. However, several of my fellow interns are. We've been going to a bar to watch games during lunch. And I'm finding that I enjoy watching it when I'm with other people who love it.

Disappointments: Still annoyed about that stupid call in the game of Brazil v. Croatia and the fact that the player isn't owning up to faking the foul.

Surprising moments: How badly Spain lost

Hopes: Just that I keep having fun watching.

we're looking really good! the teamwork is solid, and benzema seems as pumped up as the rest of us!

i'm just disappointed at the disgusting way honduras played. like, guys, stop rolling around on the ground like someone just shot you. nobody's buying it, and certainly not the referee. i cheered at the red card.

That game was crazy. Honduras were just being absolutely ridiculous the whole game.

You guys seem like you have a good team though! One that's fun to watch and not going to self-destruct in a vicious circle of rumor and mutual loathing (or whatever happened last time) so that's something.

yup. even on /r/soccer, where americans were supportive of them, their opinion changed after the match. it's like, get a grip, honduras; you're being so ridiculous that reddit changed their mind about you.

yeah, a lot of people are pleasantly surprised with the team! we were wary at first on account of what happened last time (we don't like to talk about it), but now everyone is saying they'll watch the next game and support them.

I didn't watch the Honduras game. Brazil was pretty bad in their first game, though, as was Portugal. Although at least the Portugese guy got red carded. Brazil actually got a foul out of their shenanigans. I really honestly am wondering about the ref being bribed.

I didn't see the Honduras game. Did see the Nigeria-Iran, game, though, and the Nigerians' injuries were...very dubious at best. One guy was laying on the ground like he was half-conscious, but then suddenly popped up pointing at where he was slammed in the jaw. o.O

I was actually scared to think Germany would lose to Portugal right before the game, I'm glad to have the surprising moments of them scoring 4-0!

I also have had a somewhat optimistic view for USA. They managed to move on from the group stage last WC, and they have a very smart coach who, as per his German ways (I think he's pretty similar to Jogi), is pretty realistic that the US has little chance of winning the cup, but they can go far and surprise people.
That came was much more tense then the Ger/Por game.

Well, Klinsi and Jogi worked together for a long time and Jogi took over directly after Klinsi left so them being kind of similar is not too surprising.
