i like the idea of fanmixes in theory, but in practice most people just seem to throw a bunch of songs they like together without putting much thought in it beyond "part of the lyrics sort of applies to character x". sometimes every song in a fanmix is a different genre, and the music snob in me rears its ugly head to say "what the heck made you think putting daft punk and johnny cash in the same mix would be a good idea?".
idk, i just like it better when the genre fits the universe and/or the character. like, miles davis don draper fanmix? excellent. rap jesse pinkman fanmix? fuck yes. but florence and the machine and dean winchester? give me a break.

These are my exact feelings about most fanmixes - except most of the time you don't even see something as inventive as daft punk and johnny cash, most of the time it's 12 generic indie tracks with accompanying washed out, filterfied pictures of a character with the song title written in handwriting font on the top and you're just like 'what is this even supposed to MEAN?'

I personally love that in the Psych fandom there are so many mixes that are full of upbeat indie-pop mixed with 80s one hit wonders because that is exactlywhat Shawn, the main character would listen to - regardless of what you might think of the objective quality of those songs. If you know the fandom at all, you might get a kick out of the fact there is a lovely Shawn/Lassiter fanmix with only Tears for Fears songs for Shawn and only Frank Sinatra songs for Lassiter...

And one of my favourite SPN mixes is this: http://flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com/168948.html
Dean's Anti-iPod Mixtape. It doesn't have songs that much different from what is played in the show, but the songs played in the show are exactly what Dean listens to so anything else would be blasphemy. And you could just imagine Dean making this mix after Sam defiled his car with an iPod too. It's simple, but that's why it works.

omg I loved that Shawn/Lassiter fanmix, I still have it on my iTunes.

But god, every time I hear Shake It Out, I think of the characters on Supernatural. It's maaaaade for them, practically!

I do like a mix of genres as long as they have a decent flow.

I don't know, man.

I think that Addicted to Love cover could work pretty well for Dean, at least at some points.

I can understand fiddling around with genres, because not everybody is into the kind of music that would best suit their character/verse. But a lot of people use songs that give them "[character] feeeeels" without considering whether or not the song actually applies to the character.

For example, I have a really strong connection between Will/Beverly (from Hannibal) and a mashup of Rock You by 1D and DNA by Little Mix, because I was listening to it a lot while making and consuming fanworks related to them. For that reason alone, I really want to put it on a mix. But I know it doesn't relate to their relationship at all, so I won't. Simple as that.

One of the reasons my fanmixes take so long to finish is that every single song needs to have lyrics that fit. If the song fits in general but there is that one line that just doesn't fit, it can't be on the mix.
