So the fanmix secrets got me thinking

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. I should stop that. :-P In all seriousness, the secrets have pushed to ask a few questions.

-What are your thoughts on instrumentals in fanmixes?
-How do you feel about music from older artists (e.g. Joe Jackson) being included?
-Do you think there are some popular songs that might be worth your time seeing in a fanmix if it was performed differently (like a metal version of One Republic's "Counting Stars")?

I know I have crazy thoughts about fanmixes. Truth is, I like the concept but hold a lot of ambivalence toward them for content and fan reaction reasons toward them. Your thoughts?

All those things sound acceptable. I'd be into it.

Yes to all of these. I want to see all different kinds of music included.

Today I had a massive craving for new music. I should look up some fanmixes.

First two are cool. Covers can be cool, but I generally iffy about them.

I love the idea of fanmixes, but I honestly mostly skim over them.

-I'd say they're useful. I mean, the ones I've done so far are about things that use instrumental already. If you think Gustav Holst's Mars fits a character, go for it.
-Also acceptable. I've used Mozart, Richard Grieg and Bruce Springsteen.
-I use them if I can't find the originals on soundcloud.

For some fandoms, I love instrumentals. I think instrumentals work best in Lord of the Rings fanmixes, for example. I think not just the words, but the feel of a song should fit with the fandom/subject of the mix.

Instrumentals are great and IMO there should be more of them used in fanmixes.

Older artists too. I don't see why it matters how old the artist is as long as the music is good and it fits the mix.

And again, if the song is good and the cover is fun, I don't see the problem. (The only issue I have with covers is usually people pick ones I hate, but can't help that.)

- I don't generally care for instrumentals so not a fan of them in mixes.
- old music is awesome!
-depends on the genre of the cover. I'm not a fan of metal, so the example one if probably not like.

A totally instrumental fanmix can be really great, especially if it nails the theme or tone of the show. (There's quite a few instrumental Hannibal fanmixes that are great.)

Older artists are good too. I love discovering new music I wouldn't have considered otherwise.

Popular songs... can actually be okay, IF they fit the characters/show. Covers can work, too. Sometimes a cover can reinterpret the lyrics or theme, and that can be interesting.

A lot of popular songs are WAY overused, though, and often they don't really fit the characters. It feels like people just use them because they can't think of anything else.

As long as you have a reason for including the song i.e. it fits in with the theme you are trying to emphasize or the atmosphere you are trying to create, or it owuld be the kind of song the character would listen to, go for it.

When I listen to a fanmix I like it to follow some sort of theme or narrative (more than "here are my destiel feels in music form <3<3<3") so if it fits with the theme all of these are great, like I often like instrumentals to open or close a fanmix as they are great at setting a mood in my opinion.

And covers and remixes are great ways to use songs in new ways, especially if they are "overused". Some times a remix or a cover will fit better too! To make an example, I would the mix I would use Britney Spears' original version of "Toxic" would be a very different mix than the one I would use Yael Naim's cover of it.*

One of my favorite playlists (not a fanmix, from NaNoWriMo, but still) has instrumental songs, and they're lovely!

I grew up on the Monkees and classical music, and that's pretty much it, so older artists are fun, for me, at least! I learn more about older music from fanmixes then I did from my parents. |D

Depends on if it fits the rest of the fanmix/makes sense. :3

-I LOVE instrumentals in fanmixes; some of the best fanmixes I've downloaded have gotten played over and over again precisely because they have gorgeous instrumentals that are useful in other contexts (mostly tabletop RP.)

-Why not? If a song is appropriate to a character/mix, why hold back if it's not recent? *shrugs*

-I'd be into that, too, although as long as a fanmix isn't ONLY popular songs, I don't mind a few of them. *further shrug*

I love instrumentals, it's why I used to download Korean drama soundtracks all the time.

I also love the thought of different covers. I have a version of "Call Me Maybe" sang by fun. which is nice and I have 5 different versions of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

If you like interesting covers or different styles, check out Nouvelle Vague. It's this French band that takes 80s new wave music and plays it bossanova style.
