I think my oldest sister is sorta right about my older sister when she said it seems kinda pointless that she went to a four-year private college to get a degree in English, then got married to someone she met in college (they are a good couple, nothing wrong here, just to make that clear), work for about 8 months or so (not related to English, though having a degree might have slightly helped), then become a stay-at-home mom, probably for at least two decades (they want several kids, already have one). I mean it's my sister's life and all, but I don't think I could ever go to college to get a degree then just become a stay-at-home parent a year later. At least they payed off their student loans within the first 4 years of having gotten their degrees at least.

Personally I think there's value in study and earning a degree even if you don't use it for work afterward.

AYRT

I agree, it and kinda reminds me of that old idea of Republican Motherhood from the early 1800s, but I still can't help but feel the way I do about this.

Life happens. Sometimes it doesn't happen the way you think.

You are not your sister. I think you realize this. But she is making her own choices. They may or may not be worth it to her, but they are her choices.

Getting a degree is still a good idea, because you have no way of knowing whether or not you'll need to find a job again. But private college? For a degree in English? Nah. Not unless you've got solid plans about your career where that extra cachet of a private college makes the difference, and quite frankly, I'm not convinced it really does.

Just to add something to think about: a lot of stay-at-home parents that I know also work from home, whether it be part time, online, freelance, etc.

Staying home to raise kids =/= never working again
