Well, most people who bother to ask me have barely heard of "Nay-rue-tow," let alone series like Gurren Lagann, and there's a lot of culture smush at my school, so that might be it. Also my school is huge, so I usually know them best only as a classmate. Generally it goes like this:

Them: What are you listening to?
Me: Abingdon Boys School.
Them: ...what's that?
Me: Japanese rock band.
Them: Huh, cool!

Then sometimes they'll ask me why I'm listening to Japanese and not American, and that's when I go with the creative half-truths and say it's because I'm studying the language so I want to surround myself with it as much as possible to acquaint myself with vocabulary and grammar. Which is true! I just neglect to mention that the only a.b.s. songs I have were used for OPs.
