Either way, there's a direct similarity, which is incredibly amusing \o/

I suppose. But it's more like that religion just happens to the be the metaphor that we ended up with for fandom. It's kind of an unconscious thing because we use metaphors in daily speech regularly. Take love - you can be shot down when you ask someone on a date or you can win their heart. Sometimes love rivals will battle for the person's affections, but one person has to lose. You can say that "war" and "love" are similar, but it just happens that we've assimilated that as the metaphor -for- love. Religion and fandom are similar for a perfectly logical reason: religion just ended up being the perfect metaphor to describe it.

...um, just being my English geek self, ignore me. 8DD;

Well yeah, I'm just amused that people treat fandom in such a way that religion can be considered a suitable metaphor. And I also believe that it goes a bit beyond metaphor in some cases--sure, people call it "converting" someone to a fandom--but some people really are that passionate about it. And that something most consider so trivial is extremely similar to something most consider so important, with few differences in some key areas...I just find that funny.
