Actually, the best fandoms have a mix

(Anonymous) 2014-06-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience, I've found the best fandoms have a mix of men and women of all ages. It might lean more towards one gender than the other, but having a significant portion of both sexes makes for a more fun fandom, in my opinion. Case in point: the Avatar The Last Airbender and the Star Wars fandoms. I love both of these fandoms and sure there's shipping and intellectual discussions and arguments about power levels, but one single thing doesn't hugely dominate the fandom. You'll get extremes at both ends in such fandoms though. In Star Wars, for example, you do see a few extremist social justice warriors, but you also see men who believe that cosplayers need to "take responsibility" for getting groped and think it's not fair to expect people to control themselves all the time (I am not paraphrasing at all here -- one poster said that on a message board I frequent). These types of people get dog piled (and often with very good reason) and so it helps to keep the fandom healthy and balanced.

When you have lots of people with a variety of experiences, one faction can't dominate. In the portion of the Star Wars fandom I frequent, I know men and women of a variety of ages (14 to 58) and I've never felt the urge to leave the fandom. It's when fandoms get polarized that the extremists come out and begin to dominate. But I don't really think that's a result of being female-dominated.

This is the best comment I've read on this thread.

Agreed...I liked fandoms that are not dominated by one gender or the other.

Wow, where have you been hanging out in the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom? That place can be downright horrible. You must've discovered the elusive good section. I've been lurking/participating for over seven years and am still searching for what you've apparently found.
