Hmm, on he off chance, what are some good ways to make some extra money (preferably legally) that do not involve a job contact with set hours.

I have no advice but I like that you said "preferably legal". XD

Haha, same. Always nice to get that out of the way first. XD

Got a hobby you could turn into an Etsy shop? Unlikely to be a lot of extra money, but it's an option.

Was considering it, just not exactly sure what I'd do. The obvious thing is jewelry, but there's a lot of people out there more talented than me.

Because I just read an article on this, if you have some crash space and don't mind hosting strangers, apparently AirBnB can be a good source of extra income.

Sadly I do not have the space, but good to know!

Depending on your credentials, you could apply to score the writing portion of the SAT. You could give blood. You could apply at a temp agency. You could do yard work in your neighborhood or babysit. Sell your stuff.

ETA: wait, maybe it's plasma instead of blood. IDK A million years ago when I was in college, some of my friends would donate blood or plasma for money.

It's plasma! :D I actually just suggested this below. I'm a phlebotomist at a plasma collection place.

Hmm, what kind of credentials would you need to score the SAT writing portions?

Sorry for the late reply. I'm really sick. I think you have to have some experience teaching writing. It was about 6 years ago and I don't remember.

Yard work. Lawns, landscaping, watering plants, shoveling snow--it's all pretty basic and easy, and you can basically set your hours as long as you show up regularly.

If you're not an outdoors person, get a cross stitch conversion program and make cross stitch patterns. You can sell them as kits or just patterns.

SEO/content writing. You're paid on a per-piece basis and can choose to accept only jobs that you have time to write.

Donate plasma? At least if you're in the US, "donating" plasma actually involves financial reimbursement. I'm a pblebotomist at a plasma collection center, and with the goal of getting donors to come in twice a week, you can make almost one hundred dollars a week (coming in twice, about an hour for each visit). Plus, the plasma is used to make medicine so it's really helpful! No contract, no hours, just make an appointment. I don't know if you have a place like this near you, but if needles don't freak you out too much it's really easy.

Hmm...speaking as someone else who also needs some extra cash, how would I go about doing this/where would I go to start this process? At this point, even an extra $10 or $20 a week would be a boon, forget $100, as I can't get full-time hours at my job.

Re: Advice thread

Provided there is a center in your area, it's pretty easy. If you're eligible to donate blood, you're probably okay donating plasma, too (FDA regulations and all). The first time you go, you usually need to meet with the center nurse for a check up and vein check (you should have pretty good sized veins to donate), but after that, it's quick and easy. At my place, you make an appointment whenever you like, provided we're not totally booked (but we're open all day so it's not too hard to find a slot. The whole process takes roughly an hour or less each time, and you can bring your laptop, books, whatever to entertain yourself. Ideally, they want you to come twice a week (but you can't go more than that). Because of this, most centers I think have a "bonus" the second time you come in a week (for example, each visit is thirty dollars, but if you go twice a week you get an extra twenty dollars, so a total of eighty per week)

Most of the policies are probably similar, but I guess it would depend on the company you go with. The big thing is just having a center in your town. If you have one near you, it really doesn't hurt to try, making appointments is free. I used to do it myself, but I'm not allowed since I work for the company now, haha.

That sounds really good, actually. Beyond just Googling "where do I sell my plasma", is there a good way to find plasma centers to donate to? Any companies you recommend looking for in particular? :)

Re: Advice thread

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd probably just Google, I'm not sure how else to find them myself! I don't know many companies besides my own (but I know they are out there), and mine is only in my region I think. Good luck! :D

That would be sweet, sadly you don't get money for that here.

With the caveat that you have to be prepared to occasionally lose some money...

Buying stuff from yard sales/consignment stores/used game stores to resell on eBay. You have to know the going value for what you're buying, but if you do, you can make a pretty decent amount. I just made a $15 profit on a single action figure earlier this week.

I'm going to try this, but, do you know good ways to find out what something is worth? I know pretty well for clothes, but let's say furniture is less obvious.

Re: Advice thread

Do a search on eBay and filter it by 'Sold Items.' That will show you what a particular item has actually sold for recently.
