Hrm... I do agree that sometimes it's refreshing to be in a male-dominated fanspace because the topics of conversation are different than the same old things I see in female-dominated spaces (issues fic, female-character-focused meta, etc.), but man, I get very quickly fed up with porn written by guys, with the multiple orgasms all over the place, need to assign dick/breast sizes to all relevant characters, "hitting the cervix", "he knew he'd impregnated her", and so on... *cringe* But yeah, I suppose I do think the female sector of fandom could be more open and unashamed of writing fap material. It's not like it's something to be ashamed of.

But yeah, I think in general, branching out and discussing a fandom with different types of fans is the best way to have an interesting fandom experience. I don't think one group of people is really better than another.

I've noticed a weird trend on tumblr with female fans drawing something smutty (or sometimes even something that's just implied to be smutty) and then posting it with a tagline like "o-oh I can't believe I actually drew something like this, how embarrassing" or "I don't usually draw stuff like this!"

It's really obnoxious and offputting, to be frank. Either draw porn and own it or don't draw it at all.

See, I would put that down to their age and experience more than their gender. There's a point you feel shy about it (not everyone, obviously), maybe worry about getting caught, especially if you still live in momma's house, and then you grow out of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm... I think there is a gender component to it, though. I wasn't really exposed to porn and even now don't seek it out regularly. Whereas all the guys I've talked to, porn is about the most normalized, universal part of their adolescent experience that you can come up with. I think (but obviously I'm not sure) that guys are much more nonchalant about the idea that porn exists solely for the purpose to get them off and so they're much more comfortable with writing/drawing porn purely for the sexual gratification aspect.

Whereas for women, when they write porn, it often needs to have some deeper rationale behind it -- that it's character exploration or it's progressive/has a point, etc. If the kink involves dub/non-con or some other problematic aspect with consent, care needs to be taken to make sure that people know that the author understands consent didn't happen, and even then, there'll still potentially be complaints that sexual fantasy is not a strong enough rationale to justify writing fictional rape in a sexy way. I don't think you'll get that kind of thing in a male-heavy space?

So even among men and women of the same age, I think women are less experienced and so less comfortable with writing/drawing porn purely for sexual titillation, and more likely to couch it with disclaimers and expressions of embarrassment.

Your second paragraph is entirely because of feminism shaming women.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think some segments of feminism actually try to do the opposite and say "writing something purely for sexual titillation is cool, your kinks are cool". Also, I think parts of society outside of feminism also do some of the shaming (for example, people freaking out about fangirls ruining the fandom with their "vapid" slashing and romance-craziness, which would cause women to feel like writing fap material is not a legitimate thing to do and so it has to be made deeper and less sexual gratification-y). So I don't think it's entirely because of feminism, or that feminism in general takes this stance.

But yes, I do think a significant part of the shaming of women comes from women in the name of feminism. Agreed on that.

No, that's patriarchy shaming women. Cuz we're supposed to be pure and virginal and not know what a vagina is for and only screw to mak babby or something.

This has been exactly my experience too. I've never encountered a guy who feels the need to justify creating porn or looking at it; it's always just "yo, here's some porn." They don't tend to overanalyze it, either - they write what they want to write because they find it hot.

I wish I were a man. Why must women always be burdened with all sorts of accusations and garbage?

I don't think impregnation kink is totally a male domain either. I don't know for sure, but one of the more lack-luster Harmonian writers I have occasionally read has a big thing for getting Hermione pregnant, and I think that writer is female.

I'm female and have a huge kink for unprotected (hetero) sex, but the only girls I've seen confessing to have a thing for impregnation seems to be the ones starring in hentai doujinshi.
