What's more annoying to read in fanficfanfic (specifically shippy fanfic): villainous character is redeemed through Noble Sacrifice (TM) which causes said character's death or same sacrifice happens but the character lives through deus ex machina?

One is sad but I can't help but feel the other is a copout.

I'm okay with them both.

Thanks. That actually does kind of help.

I like redemption more with actual character death, but in some cases the second can work. You should do what you want!

So do I. I've been feeling like the death ending is the "truest" to the story I ended up developing, but all I wanted to originally write was a shippy fix-it fic with a bit of a dark edge. And I feel like if I follow my angsty heart, I'm going to have to write fix-it fic for my fix-it fic.

That and it's turning out to be a really long fic. I thought the more I wrote, the more the answer would come to me... But it hasn't.

Depends on way too many other plot factors for me to make a general comment.

One thing I've seen more than once is that the writer ends the fic with the sad but dramatically apropos sacrifice, then posts a one-shot 'alternate ending', like "if you are really sad about the ending here's an alternate version I considered!"

I like both, and either can work as long as there's a good reason for it.

I like neither. I think redeeming villains is usually a copout, and always pointless in fanfiction, because we know damn well that villain is only redeemed because the author likes them. It adds very little to the story.

Well, that's sort of the whole point of the story. I ship heros/villains. It's a thing of mine.

Well there you go. Fanfiction usually does those things for shipping reasons rather than because the story is better for it, so I don't like seeing it in fic.

Way to write off whole ships and stories. Yes, complete 180 villain redeeming is annoying because it comes out of nowhere and is purely done because the writer thinks two characters are hot together.

But there are stories where the author manages to keep that original core that made the villain so great to start with. They end up being my favorite stories to read and some of my greatest challenges to write, because they do straddle a thin line.

And a lot of time the change isn't 100%. They can't fully let go of their selfish and/or destructive tendencies. They die. The hero realizes despite the passion isn't enough to make a relationship last.

That's what's making the ending of mine so difficult because I wanted to create something that ended happily, only I can't. Because it is a copout and the story is better for his death.

On the other hand, thank you. I think I know what ending I'm going to go with despite the fact that it will probably piss off half the people who end up reading it.
