Is there a gentle way to break up with someone?

When I got into my current relationship, I did so fully expecting it to be temporary, something I (thought I) made clear to my boyfriend. Increasingly, though, he's been talking long-term plans, what our relationship will be like when I move in a few months (which is about when I expected to end the relationship), etc. Apparently, he actually loves me, but I don't really love him back (I know that sounds terrible, but I promise that at least I like him and the relationship is fun).

I think he's pretty much forgotten what I said half a year ago about it being temporary, and he's a great guy and not someone whose heart I want to break. But it looks like I have to. I am just not invested enough in this relationship to keep it up long-distance, especially since I know I'm a career person and will put my career and goals ahead of a relationship.

Any way to break it to someone gently? And any thoughts on whether I should tell him now that I really do expect it to end soon, or if I should let him focus on our time together now and put a firmer end to it later?

Don't have advice on how to do it but I think it's better to break up sooner rather than later. I don't think it's a bad thing to be in a relationship just for fun with no expectation of seriousness, but when it becomes apparent the other person sees it really differently then you should probably either discuss it with them or end the relationship if it can't be worked out.

I like Captain Awkward for relationship advice columns, maybe there's some advice there about breaking up as kindly as possible. (People are gonna get hurt regardless.)
