Re: Advice thread
(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 04:04 am (UTC)(link)When I got into my current relationship, I did so fully expecting it to be temporary, something I (thought I) made clear to my boyfriend. Increasingly, though, he's been talking long-term plans, what our relationship will be like when I move in a few months (which is about when I expected to end the relationship), etc. Apparently, he actually loves me, but I don't really love him back (I know that sounds terrible, but I promise that at least I like him and the relationship is fun).
I think he's pretty much forgotten what I said half a year ago about it being temporary, and he's a great guy and not someone whose heart I want to break. But it looks like I have to. I am just not invested enough in this relationship to keep it up long-distance, especially since I know I'm a career person and will put my career and goals ahead of a relationship.
Any way to break it to someone gently? And any thoughts on whether I should tell him now that I really do expect it to end soon, or if I should let him focus on our time together now and put a firmer end to it later?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 05:13 am (UTC)(link)I like Captain Awkward for relationship advice columns, maybe there's some advice there about breaking up as kindly as possible. (People are gonna get hurt regardless.)
