I hate this kind of generalization 'all women are catty' 'all dudes write better meta'....ugh. no.

HOWEVER, I came to fandom through male dominated forums. Which were really sexist and very gatekeepery against women, especially new female fans (god forbid someone not be into something their whole lives, right?), and then came into DW/LJ/Tumblr fandom, which is, I admit, female dominated. And I can't deny it: females treat other female fans worse than guys ever did. Guys will pull all sorts of 'ruined forever' stuff, and 'ew girls and their slashfic', but females make their shit personal, like you are the shittiest person to ever walk the face of the earth and deserve to be raped because you kudos'd a noncon fic.

DA. I think that's definitely a big problem, but I think in the typical fan's experience, it's very rare for that to happen or to see that happen to someone they know.

Whereas in female-dominated fandom, that kind of thing is very close to home (well, "you deserve to be raped" seems REALLY rare and trolly to me, but "you're a shitty person" and a dogpile, sure). I do think the conviction that people are acting on the side of "right" or "justice" has the effect of upping their bile and aggressiveness because they feel justified in their actions, and that's the environment female-dominated spaces have had for the last few years.
