They turned that around and added the "can't do spells on/for myself" rule because they decided Facilier was cooler to look at than Naveen.

To be fair, they were right. Part of the reason "Friends on the Other Side" was so awesome was of how they animated him. They did SUCH a good job on how fluid he was!
