I would say pedophilia is on a completely different level from rape and abuse, though. I don't know, to me it's understandable if people want to read rape/abuse fic, they have their reasons. It doesn't necessarily mean they're rapists. Pedophilia, though... I have a hard time thinking people who read/write pedo-fic aren't at least somewhat messed up. (Then again, I don't think there's anything wrong with consensual incest between adults, so maybe I'm messed up too)

I am so not into pedo/shota - that's one of the very, very few kinks that is a major squick for me and I will not, under any circumstances, touch. That being said, a fandom friend once indicated to me that she liked shota, and I was so baffled I had her explain.

Basically, she said, for her it's like rape kink - in that she's identifying with the victim, not with the attacker. For her, it isn't underage kids that are turning her on, it's the fantasy of being taken advantage of, from a weak and vulnerable position.

Which sort of made sense to me, I guess? That being said, I think there's a world of difference between shota (manga drawn) and fiction, and of course... real kiddie porn. If you are looking at real kiddie porn, I don't give a fuck who you are identifying with, you are terrible and should be in prison.

Most people are identifying with the kid. One of the ongoing complaints in the ageplay community is that there's always WAY more people wanting to play kids than grownups.

NAYRT

What really bothers me is how little the moral crusaders bother to do their research. I know identifying with the kid in shota is the way most readers self-insert. Just about anyone who reads or writes shota could explain that. It's not one of the more esoteric aspects of the kink. And yet, it takes someone (like the AYRT) who honestly wants to wrap their head around what their friend is getting out of this, to get past the iron-clad stereotype that people read shota because they fantasize about raping kids.

I'd imagine that's because the outliers who are fantasizing about raping or molesting kids when they engage in the kink are both more horrific and more widely publicized. It's not fair to tar all fans with the same brush, obviously, but it's a very easy jump to make.

While I appreciate that you don't assume all shota fans are horrific, I've been in shota-prevalent fandoms for many years (starting well before I was a legal adult myself), and I've yet to meet anyone who fits outsiders' stereotype of a predatory!shota-fan. In my experience, this isn't 'tarring all fans with the sins of a few,' it's outright fabricating a problem. People who wouldn't be caught dead in our spaces just take it for granted that of course shota must be where the pedophiles hang out. :/

I don't think shota is okay *because* I haven't encountered creeps. It has as much of a right to exist as any other part of fandom, and people who act badly ought to be held accountable for acting badly, not handwaved with bullshit expectations regarding their kinks. But I thought the overall vibe of the space was worth mentioning, because the rest of fandom seems to automatically assume it provides a more healthy and abuse-free environment, and I haven't found that to be the case.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about reading fic that suggests cross-generational relationships with one party under the age of consent. Even above the age of consent it's till kind of creepy, especially if the older person involved is a sizable multiple of the younger person's age.

Even fic that graphically writes sex between younger people (~13 or less) is still skeevy to me.

Seconding the lack of concern about consensual incest between consenting adults! I've litte interest in playing social-taboo moral warrior, I have my own life to organize - don't need to try and run someone else's too.
