Looking for shows I can watch with my mother

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-06-21 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Either animated or live action will work. I'd prefer things we can marathon. Available on sites like Hulu or Crunchyroll is a big bonus.

Shows my mother has watched on her own include:
* The X-Files (early seasons--she said it got too gory)
* Buffy the Vampire Slayer (full show)
* Lost (lasted about halfway)
* Heroes (lasted to the very beginning of season 3)

Shows I've watched with her:
* Princess Tutu (her favorite show ever)
* Tiger and Bunny (Kotetsu is a lot like my father)

Shows she hasn't liked:
* Trigun (she stopped liking it after it got dark and serious)
* Tonari no Seki-kun (she thought it was boring that Seki never talked)
* Chobits (I regret even suggesting this)

Currently watching:
* Kurau: Phantom Memory (she likes it so far)

Hit me with whatever you've got! (Since she liked Tutu so much, I'm particularly interested in good magical girl shows--I tried Futari wa Pretty Cure on my own, but I thought it was pretty eh.)

For starters, your Mom is awesome! (My Mom would never watch Buffy, Lost, or Heroes, or any anime. She's not actively anti-, just super not into it, which I find to be very sad.)

Have you tried Magica Madoka? It's on Netflix streaming, and it's good in the way that Tutu is. :)

Would she be into a heist show, like Leverage or Hustle? Lots of action, banter, and no gore/excessive mystery (a la Lost.)

I love Madoka Magica, but I'm afraid it would be too dark for her. I mean, if Trigun was too dark, Madoka Magica would be just relentless.

I'm not sure if she's ever watched a heist show. I never have, either. I'll ask her.

Seconding Leverage. Even if heist stuff isn't usually your thing, this show is just so much fun.

I can't think of anything to rec, but I just want to say, your mom loving Princess Tutu makes me so happy for some reason.

My mom has always been one of those "All animation is for children, and there for normal people stop watching it at a certain age."

(As I'm probably your mom's age (and Buffy is one of my favs), I'm going to list things that I've enjoyed watching with my spawn. :p)

- She might like Fruits Basket or Magic Users Club. (Not sure if those are free-streaming anywhere though)
- I always think Bob's Burgers is fun. ( The first few seasons are defintely on Netflix)
- Since there's some drama in there, try out Deep Space Nine (which I know is on NF).

How much does Magic User's Club rely on sex jokes? That was what scared her away from Chobits.

Fruits Basket is worth a shot. I don't know much about DS9, but I could look up more info.

Ah ... it's not a sex comedy per se, but it does have a bit. I think it's all adorable (and certainly nothing worse than BtVS, imo). The 6-ep OVA for Magic User's is lighter and funnier than the 13 (?) ep series.

Actually, considering Tutu and Buffy, your mom might like Utena (At least the first two arcs: the third one is pretty weird.)

DS9 is the best of the Star Treks, imo. Very character driven, excellent, complex female (and male) characters.

Ah and one final (though again, I have this on DVD so I don't know streaming) - Gilmore Girls.

(Plus - the current series Playing House might be another one.)

For stuff on Hulu, if she likes magical girl stuff she might enjoy Pretear and Magic Knight Rayearth. Harder to find stuff, Magic User's Club is great and by the same director as Princess Tutu (non-magical girl wise, he also did Kaleido Star and Croisee in a Foreign Labyrinth, which are both on Hulu and are pretty good as well).

My go-to recs for Good Cute Anime are Mushishi and Moyashimon. The first one is incredibly chill and about a dude who wanders around Japan solving people's problems with little supernatural critters preferably without either side getting hurt, and the second is about a guy who can see bacteria (which are SUPER CUTE) and is going to ag college.

I have legit never watched a Magical Girl show that wasn't Madoka so sorry, no help there.

Maybe Xena? I haven't watched anime in a long while (other than Tiger and Bunny and Free!) so I don't have suggestions for that... (I adore Cowboy Bebop but if she thought Trigun was too serious I doubt she would like Bebop. Or Xena, actually... So my comment is pointless.)

Fresh Pretty Cure! It's far better written that Futari Wa.

TV Shows
Caaastleee! It's pretty fun.
Bones, even if last I heard Bones had a baby with Booth and jumped the metaphorical shark.

Anime
Free!, if only because it's pretty light-hearted.
Lovely Complex
Card Captor Sakura
Sailor Moon
Ouran
Yamato Nedeshiko Shichi Henge/the wallflower (even if I heard everyone had Angelina Jolie lips)
Pita Ten
Tamako Market
Kyou Kara Maou (it should be old enough to be online, right?)
Nodame Cantabile
Saint Young Men

The more I go, the older the anime haha. I was going to rec Gintama, but then I remembered all the perv jokes and... yeah. Still, pretty funny, tho.

Seconding the suggestions of Card Captor Sakura and Mushishi.

Adding:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Is mostly light-hearted, has some supernatural aspects. She might not like the fanservicy scenes/suggestive jokes with Mitsuru, though)

She might like D.N.Angel. It's magical boy instead of magical girl, for the most part kind of cute. I personally didn't like the anime too much, but you might take a look at it.

Other magical girl series I know of are Ojamajo Doremi and Tokyo MewMew - though I only know they look kind of cute, I've never watched them. There's also Wedding Peach, but that one is really, really weird.

This is kind of a long shot, but you could give Sarah Jane Adventures or Wizards vs Aliens a try.

They're both fantasy-flavored scifi, made for children's tv, very colorful and cheesy but with a surprising amount of heart (and SJA isn't afraid to address real problems too). Marathoning one of them would be a little like having fairy floss for dinner, but an ep here and there might be good fun!

idk if it's streaming, but Level E is hilarious and super fun. There are a few slightly darker episodes, and the beginning does seem dark, but don't let it fool you. I generally found it very enjoyable and satisfying (also quite short). And no sex jokes!

I don't know if Twelve Kingdoms would be a bit too heavy, but it's an excellently plotted show, really brilliant, and amazing characterization. While it's not super happy-go-lucky I found it not to be really what I'd consider grim.

Sailor Moon Crystal starts in two weeks! You could always watch that from the beginning together.
