Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
Shows my mother has watched on her own include:
* The X-Files (early seasons--she said it got too gory)
* Buffy the Vampire Slayer (full show)
* Lost (lasted about halfway)
* Heroes (lasted to the very beginning of season 3)
Shows I've watched with her:
* Princess Tutu (her favorite show ever)
* Tiger and Bunny (Kotetsu is a lot like my father)
Shows she hasn't liked:
* Trigun (she stopped liking it after it got dark and serious)
* Tonari no Seki-kun (she thought it was boring that Seki never talked)
* Chobits (I regret even suggesting this)
Currently watching:
* Kurau: Phantom Memory (she likes it so far)
Hit me with whatever you've got! (Since she liked Tutu so much, I'm particularly interested in good magical girl shows--I tried Futari wa Pretty Cure on my own, but I thought it was pretty eh.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)Have you tried Magica Madoka? It's on Netflix streaming, and it's good in the way that Tutu is. :)
Would she be into a heist show, like Leverage or Hustle? Lots of action, banter, and no gore/excessive mystery (a la Lost.)
Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
I'm not sure if she's ever watched a heist show. I never have, either. I'll ask her.

Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
My mom has always been one of those "All animation is for children, and there for normal people stop watching it at a certain age."
Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
- She might like Fruits Basket or Magic Users Club. (Not sure if those are free-streaming anywhere though)
- I always think Bob's Burgers is fun. ( The first few seasons are defintely on Netflix)
- Since there's some drama in there, try out Deep Space Nine (which I know is on NF).
Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
Fruits Basket is worth a shot. I don't know much about DS9, but I could look up more info.
Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
Actually, considering Tutu and Buffy, your mom might like Utena (At least the first two arcs: the third one is pretty weird.)
DS9 is the best of the Star Treks, imo. Very character driven, excellent, complex female (and male) characters.
Ah and one final (though again, I have this on DVD so I don't know streaming) - Gilmore Girls.
(Plus - the current series Playing House might be another one.)

Caaastleee! It's pretty fun.
Bones, even if last I heard Bones had a baby with Booth and jumped the metaphorical shark.
Anime
Free!, if only because it's pretty light-hearted.
Lovely Complex
Card Captor Sakura
Sailor Moon
Ouran
Yamato Nedeshiko Shichi Henge/the wallflower (even if I heard everyone had Angelina Jolie lips)
Pita Ten
Tamako Market
Kyou Kara Maou (it should be old enough to be online, right?)
Nodame Cantabile
Saint Young Men
The more I go, the older the anime haha. I was going to rec Gintama, but then I remembered all the perv jokes and... yeah. Still, pretty funny, tho.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 10:42 am (UTC)(link)Adding:
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Is mostly light-hearted, has some supernatural aspects. She might not like the fanservicy scenes/suggestive jokes with Mitsuru, though)
She might like D.N.Angel. It's magical boy instead of magical girl, for the most part kind of cute. I personally didn't like the anime too much, but you might take a look at it.
Other magical girl series I know of are Ojamajo Doremi and Tokyo MewMew - though I only know they look kind of cute, I've never watched them. There's also Wedding Peach, but that one is really, really weird.
Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)They're both fantasy-flavored scifi, made for children's tv, very colorful and cheesy but with a surprising amount of heart (and SJA isn't afraid to address real problems too). Marathoning one of them would be a little like having fairy floss for dinner, but an ep here and there might be good fun!
Re: Looking for shows I can watch with my mother
I don't know if Twelve Kingdoms would be a bit too heavy, but it's an excellently plotted show, really brilliant, and amazing characterization. While it's not super happy-go-lucky I found it not to be really what I'd consider grim.
