You know that some of the people exploring these kinks have been victim to it.

Fiction can be a safe way for them to deal with what happened to them.

Yeah, I'm wondering how the OP of this secret feels about the OP of secret 15. (And if it's still judgmental, I'm on the side of 15.)

OP of 15

thank you because this secret kind of made me feel like shit, not gonna lie

I'm right here with you.

Ugh, I'm sorry it did. I don't think people who make secrets like this one stop to think about what it's going to do to people in your position. And if they actually care about social harm, they should. The people who deserve blanket condemnation the least always take it to heart the most. *sends support*

So, what, the people who are made uncomfortable and unsafe by fandom's normalization of eroticized acts of violence are A-OK to throw under the bus because a handful exist that validate your kink?

Where do you hang out that kinkfic is taken as realistic and normal? Just the fact that it's kinkfic is enough for most people to understand it's only fantasy, and likely belongs that way.

No, I'm saying that you don't know what the impetus is for the kink and maybe you shouldn't decide that just because people have a fictional kink they in any way condone it happening to someone in real life.

I'm saying that if someone likes to watch Criminal Minds or Hannibal or Dexter, that doesn't mean they support serial killers or want them to become the norm.

I'm saying maybe that the only people who should be blamed for any acts of sexual assault are the ones who actually commit them.

Just stopped by to voice support, because I agree with this sentiment 100%. Especially your last line. Keep kicking ass, anon.

Well, thank you, I very much appreciate it.

What? People... people don't watch Hannibal and get a sudden craving for a juicy Man-Steak and go out and slice off a piece from the next bloke on the street?

... Whoops.

So, wait, if I were to actually be raped or molested, suddenly my kinks would go from Terrible to Okay? Um... would this be retroactive? Either way, according to this logic, George Will was right.

No. Firstly, I don't think fictional kinks are terrible. Secondly, the secret poster stated that the kink is harmful, which, I don't agree with, but in certain cases, it actually helps people - the very people they seem to be concerned with (I could be wrong about this - they could just be concerned about potential victims rather than victims). Thirdly, it's kind of horrible to assume that just because someone has that kink that they don't know how awful real life sexual assault is or that they would in any way condone it happening to an actual person.

There are lots of things people like in fiction that they would never be party to in real life.
