Canon or non-canon pairings?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Which do you usually ship? I usually find myself shipping non-canon pairings the most; I find it fun analyzing canon and trying to pick up subtext that supports my ship, and imagining what could be. (The only irritating part is when the shippers can't get over the fact that their otp isn't actually in fact, canon.)

I guess in a lot of cases canon ships appeal to me more because there's more there to work with, and there aren't very many I dislike. But I still ship stuff that's not canon if I like the potential.

I tend to lean a lot towards canon pairings, at least partly because I'm not usually very interested in shipping friends or enemies and that's usually where most non-canon ships seem to come from. I don't know. Mostly it's only the things that are already there in canon that catch my interest.

Non-canon, same as you, I like analyzing for subtext.

But I really do not care if the pairing doesn't become canon. Some people get super uptight about that and it's annoying.

I tend to lean towards works that have no canon pairings. There's more room to speculate and hypothesize.

Canon, or those with canon support, mostly.

Probably 50/50 in the end.

Some are canon, some are non-canon, some are non-canon but end up being very canon.

Since i tend to ship m/m pairings, generally non-canon.
*sigh*

Re: Canon or non-canon pairings?

I used to say I was canon only, but then realized how silly that was, because canon changes. So now I say I'm more into pairings that... work within the bounds of canon, or at least don't seem to disrupt it. For instance, pairings with two canon characters who hate each other make no sense to me, because I can't get past the fact that character x father killed character y's father or whatever else. Or even something far simpler, like one half of the pairing already being involved with someone. I can't look past those things.

Non-canon. They seem to get the most fic, and I usually find canon pairings boring anyway. I don't know if that's because of specific pairings or because of the canon aspect, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

Canon by process of elimination -- because I'm not all that interested in pairings, and therefore, while I will devote some time to canon shipping because it is generally an important aspect of character arcs, I devote more time to discussing and speculating about non-shippy stuff when my fandom-related discussion branches out into non-canon territory. I usually have a lot of topics that come higher than non-canon shipping on my list of Interesting Stuff To Talk About.

I just...can't really wrap my head around the idea of "dissecting a show for the shipping subtext." Nor can I usually imagine ignoring 90% of a show I love to focus solely on shipping. I'll just read the awesome/hot/adorable shippy fanfic produced by more shipping-devoted fans than me, because THAT I like both canon and non-canon :)

I'm not sure if I'm just lazy but I tend to be satisfied with canon pairings in most cases. If I get into a non-canon ship it tends to be the most popular one.

Both. Whatever dynamic interests me is what I go with. There are a fair number of times when I ship canon couples, but I don't usually read fic as much for those pairings. (Maybe because for canon couples there's a level of satisfaction I don't always get with my non-canon couples. Not even necessarily the fact that they aren't canon, but things I'd like to see the characters do or say to each other that hasn't come up in canon.)

Bit of both, honestly. Both of my main fandoms (Zelda and Pokemon) tend not to have actual canon ships - even the very implied ones (like Link/Zelda in Skyward Sword) aren't technically canon and can also be interpreted as strong friendship (for what it's worth, I like them both as a romantic ship and as a friend ship).

Of my other fandoms, it can be fairly even? WTNV - Cecil/Carlos is canon, Dana/Maureen is not. Gunnerkrigg Court - Paz/Kat is the most adorable thing ever aside from Shadow/Robot, and Parley/Smit is fantastic, but I also wouldn't be opposed to Kat/Annie at some point in the future, and one canon ship (Zimmy/Gamma) I'm kind of iffy on just because of how unhealthy and dependent it is. And for Harry Potter, I literally yelled, "YES!!" at That Scene with Hermione and Ron, but also ship both of them quite happily with other characters, I'm indifferent to Harry/Ginny, don't like how Tonks/Remus was handled, and am left cold by Snape/Lily.

Anyway, tl;dr, I like both but don't like all of them.

Non-canon 99% of the time. I like some canon pairings, but I don't really care about them beyond the media they are contained in. I don't read fic for them or think about them or OTP them.

Most of my ships tend to be non-canon. I tend to base my ships on weather I think the characters personalities go together, regardless of actual screen time together. I also tend to get a few crossover ships because of that.

For me it depends on the shipping type, I've got more Canon het ships, whereas my slash and femslash are pretty much all non-canon. Overall it might be an even split? Not too sure but it's probably close these days.

I don't consciously choose one or the other, but I have certainly gone all-out for both types (in different fandoms).

Mostly non-canon because I ship slash.

I sometimes do like canon pairings, but I sometimes feel canon pairings end up gaining an attitude behind them of "Of course it works and I don't have to explain why it works because it's canon!". Non-canon pairings don't have that as often, but that's not saying it never happens (megalithic pairings can gain such an attitude as well - Destiel anyone?).

Most of the canon pairings I support, I support in a remote kind of "Well I think they're fine just how they are, I'll go ship someone else over that'a way." manner. Like (to use LotR as example) Aragorn/Arwen and Faramir/Eowyn. I like mainstay pairings like them hanging around in the background while I'm busy shipping canonically unattached characters.

I ship what I ship. Sometimes its supported by the source material, sometimes it's a protest against the source material.

Mostly non-canon, since I ship a lot of slash and I have a lot of preferred rare-pairs and some never-mets. But if a canon pairing appeals to me, I'll ship that too!

Canon, or non-canon that has substantial textual support (subtext doesn't cut it for me) and nothing in canon that decisively rules it out.
