I've actually run across people in certain circles (eg. AVEN) who were trying to argue that pedophilia was a sexual orientation and that pedophiles were oppressed.

Yeah, I NOPED the fuck outta there.

Anyway, from what I know about pedophilia I'd argue that it functions like the legit orientations do. The word "pedophile" is often used interchangably with "child molester", but many child molesters don't act on sexual motives, but instead use sexual abuse as some kind of power thing/ or as psychological terror in a larger abuse pattern.

I'm not trying to excuse child molesters and people who produce and consume child pornography, because you have to be pretty fucking twisted to rationalize what you're doing into somehow not being about rape. But having an attraction is not the same as acting on it, and I don't see how it's impossible to be attracted to someone but also be aware that the people you're attracted are incapable of consenting and reciprocating.

I remember reading a few years back that pedophilia (like attraction to a prepubescent body) is a legit mental disorder... that there's some part of the brain that isn't working correctly and doctors don't know how to fix it.

I don't know if that's how the medical community views it anymore, but I know I read that five or six years ago.

Even if it were the case that it is a sexuality, anyone with it would have the obligation not to act on their sexuality since it hurts another person.

This is why I feel bad for the majority (I hope) of pedophiles who just keep to themselves. They have those desires and many feel they can't get help without being investigated. They certainly can't be cured of it. And it almost always stems from some kind of childhood trauma, often that of being molested themselves as a child.

Yeah, I seriously pity non-sex-offender pedophiles. It just seems like the shittiest sort of mental illness to have to live with.
