An anonymous person on the internet insulting you once doesn't count as abusive.

Being on the internet does not make it okay. You can call security on an anonymous person who insults you in such a fashion just once in meatspace. That's a clue that it's not okay for them to act like that anywhere.

This.

The relative anonymity of the internet has led a lot of people to believe that their behavior is okay...it doesn't help either that they can't see the reactions of the people they're hurting. There's still no excuse; if it's wrong to say to someone's face, it's wrong to say online.

DA

It's not anonymity that caused this. Maymay wrote a succinct explanation of this, with relevant links to studies on the subject, here http://days.maybemaimed.com/post/86131723775/artist-devises-face-mask-of-his-own-face-makes-many-copi

I find it especially ... unsurprising but sobering that trolling had a high correlation with sadism in psych tests. Putting paid to the idea that if they could just see the emotional damage they were doing, they wouldn't do it. But honestly, I don't know where that idea came from in the first place. It's all over the cultural landscape, but I've never seen evidence to support it.

I don't think that disproves my point, though. The internet is relatively anonymous even if you are using your real name. You're safe from retaliation and meatspace humiliation when you're sitting snug behind your keyboard thousands of miles away from the person you're tormenting. You do bring up a good point that some people don't care if they're hurting someone, but I also think (you can look at this very thread) that some people don't think it's a "big deal" to tell someone to kill themselves because they're able to tell themselves it's "just harmless trolling" and maybe wouldn't respond that way if they could see peoples' reactions. But you're right, there is a subset of people who would be giant douchewads either way. I do think, though, that the internet provides them a relatively safe way to do so as they don't have to worry about immediate physical retaliation and it's easier to avoid legal action.
