- Staying at people's houses when they don't have lamps or any light within arm's reach whatsoever, so you have to turn off the light and stumble back to bed, stubbing your toe and falling over things in the process. My phone has a flashlight app so it's a bit easier now, but before that? Argh.

- People who don't offer you food the entire time. Seriously, I had to make an emergency run to the 7-11 once, and the person I was staying with still didn't get the hint. (My impression is he mostly lives off of fast food. The issue wasn't money, he just didn't think groceries were essential.)

- On the flip side, company that expects to be waited on when they visit you. You did not win a trip to a resort. I am not being paid to serve you. If you want room service, there's a hotel down the street.

oh I definitely agree about staying at people's houses and don't have lights or have a room that is so ridiculously cluttered, really, where am I supposed to fit here?

and food too. I need to eat every 4-5 hours. Otherwise I get crabby and irritated and generally miserable. For the most part, I try to carry food with me but sometimes I end up eating and yes, we need to just stop at this McDonalds here on the corner for me to get some fries. Don't judge me when I did tell you I need to eat.

Yeah, it's irritating. And sometimes you just can't always have food on you, though I do try now - I just don't assume there'll be food or people will want to eat anymore.

When I'm promised a relaxing vacation and all I do is run, run, run. I'm okay with lots of sightseeing, but just LET ME KNOW that's what I'll be doing.

Also people who go on vacation and do nothing but shop. It's like THE GRAND CANYON IS RIGHT THERE and all you want to do is go into the gift shop and leave? WHHYYYY.

Re: Vacation Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God, one time I walked miles on sore legs with some people from a larger tour group (it was a school trip), only for the place we were to visit to be closed. Note that they knew I was in pain. When we finally got there and saw it was closed, their reaction was "oh, we knew that, we just wanted to go to the gift shop."

A, thanks for stringing me along, almost literally. B, Seriously? We could have gone somewhere that was actually open.

(I felt bad too, because we had to walk all the way back, and I was in so much pain I basically flipped out on the woman who worked there even though it wasn't her fault. I probably affirmed the belief that all Americans are rude quite well.)

I would have lost it, too. That was extremely rude of them to drag you along, especially knowing that you were in pain!

The thing is that one of their friends had originally invited me, but naturally she got sick that day and couldn't go. Yeah, it was one of those things... as soon as I realized she wasn't there I should have just left, but I was trying to be more friendly and outgoing and open to new people.

When you go with older family members, and they dictate everything you do, practically right down to when you're allowed to go to the bathroom. It just sucks the fun out of things. ;/

Going somewhere with friends and that one person who's happy/content/having a great time one minute then pissy the next. Can ruin a trip.

People who act like they're just checking stuff off a tourism checklist. Okay, have we seen famous thing 1 in this city? Okay, on to famous thing 2, on to famous thing 3, on to famous thing 4, and now we're done. It's just... I don't know, the fact that something is well known doesn't necessarily make it worthwhile. And it often leads to a very frantic, tunnel-vision attitude that I don't like.

I've met people who think that they can pull whatever shit they want in a foreign country and are like "lololol it's ok I have diplomatic immunity"

1. You probably don't know what diplomatic immunity actually is

2. You don't have diplomatic immunity because you are not a diplomat you are a FUCKING TOURIST

Never traveling with people like that.

People canceling plans without telling you. Don't tell me to get up early because were going to x and then decide to sleep in and not go to place and then get pissy at me for not being able to read your mind.

Getting TO the vacation. I don't travel well. I hate travel. Any kind of travel. Bring on the transporter! 3D printer people, get your heads in gear, and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Or. Y'know. A stargate works too. Anyone up for digging out the one in Antarctica....?

I can't stand when people travel somewhere really awesome, only to sit at the beach/hotel drinking the whole time, or anything else they could be doing at home. What's the point??? Go see the sights!

* People who go to a different country and refuse to learn even a few basic phrases. If you can afford to travel to another country, you can afford to Google/borrow a guidebook from the library/whatever and learn "please", "thank you" and "where is the bathroom?" There is NO excuse for trying to communicate by TALKING. LIKE. THIS. IN. VERY. LOUDLY. ENUNCIATED. ENGLISH.

* People who refuse to try the local cuisine and insist on eating McDonalds or the same generic "safe" foods that they eat back home. Honestly, why go anywhere if you don't even want to TRY and experience a new culture?
