Complainging you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some things that people complain about that you don't get or have never seen happen/had happen to you?

Re: Complainging you don't get

When women complain about pants with no pockets. Maybe we are shopping at differnet places but I have never had a pair of jeans OR dress pants without pockets.

And when they talk about not having any superhero/geeky t-shirts to wear in the women's section. Go to walmart, go to the men's section, look at their $6 superhero/minecraft/nintendo/etc shirts they have, buy which one you want. Believe it or not, Walmart employees will not be tackling you if you buy a shirt from the men's section.

There are some of us whose body shapes/sizes are such that we can't comfortably wear men's cut shirts.

Thank you. You'd think this would be more obvious. I'm short and busty and while I do buy a lot of men's clothing, it doesn't always fit well because (surprise!) they're not cut for short people with large boobs.

I think it's shitty that pants with no pockets even exist, but it's a really easy problem to avoid. Just don't buy them.

Most women's jeans/pants have pockets, but they are decidedly second-rate pockets. When I put my hand into the hip pocket of my jeans, it barely goes in up to the wrist. When I put my hand into the hip pocket of my boyfriend's jeans, I'm in halfway to the elbow before I realize what happened.

And ime, skirts and dresses with pockets are hard to find. When I dress up, I'd rather not have to put my wallet and phone in my bra.

I am always pleased when I find a skirt or dress with pockets--particularly those that are discreet AND a decent size.

Went shopping the other day and the only pair of jeans I could find in my size had a pocket that I couldn't even fit my entire hand in. No way my cell phone would fit in it. It's ridiculous and pointless. (However I bought them anyway as my other pair were two sizes too large and all but falling off of me even with a belt.)

I wear only skirts and dresses and I get so stupidly excited when I find something cute that has pockets. "That's a cute dress you're wearing today." "It has POCKETS :D"

Skirts and dresses with pockets are the best. I have an awesome black sundress with pockets and it's my absolute favorite. Hell, my sister's wedding dress had pockets!

I never use pockets anyway so I don't even pay attention to whether my pants have them or not. I don't trust sticking anything important into my pockets because I know multiple people who have lost money and expensive/important items when they fell out of their pockets.

Pockets just don't seem like a safe place to keep stuff to me.

Blatant, widespread, out-of-control bad male behavior. I've come to the conclusion that it has to be at least partly a matter of where you live, work and play and in what circles you travel, because the stories of continual harrassment and threatening behavior differ so wildly from my own experience.

That said, I've always lived in small to medium-sized, quiet Midwestern towns, attended a community college, socialized mainly in fandom-oriented spaces and held small-time jobs where corporate culture wasn't really a thing. Still, I've hung out with a lot of big, loud, boisterous and slightly disreputable guys, worked for them, accepted rides home from them, visited with them at friends' homes; and while I have heard a fair amount of loudmouthed talk that came off as disrespectful to women generally to varying degrees, the way I have actually been treated by men has rarely given me reason to complain and has never made me fear for my safety. I've also traveled a fair amount alone, on foot and by public transport, and not run into troublemakers of any kind.

(The one exception to all this in 43 years being a really vile former employer whose misogyny was so over-the-top it almost came off as a parody. Dude was from Jordan, and I hope and try to assume that he was not representative of his country's culture as a whole.)

I've always lived in a big city, frequently in areas that other people would call "shady," and I've never had those problems either. I don't have a car so I use public transport, walking, and rides from people I know (including men). I have been catcalled twice in my whole life and I have never been touched on the train or bus, or had any man who's given me a ride act creepy with me.

Same here. I don't have a car either; it's walking or public transport for me too. I've never been catcalled, harassed, touched, or anything even remotely like that. I go out walking in the evening/at night all the time, too, and I've never felt unsafe.

This. I'm from a medium-sized city and I can't remember one single instance of sexual harassment. Not one.

Similar to the first comment: I don't get when people complain about "all the see through shirts" in women's clothing and how they can't find normal tops. Where are you shopping that you can't find normal women's tops? Dude, just go to Target or something.

(Also, I don't get why they act like see through tops are the WORST thing to happen to fashion. I own a couple and I like them cause of how they LOOK. Not all clothes have to be 100 percent practical.)

Re: Complainging you don't get

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-22 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
This is amusing to me because I just went to Target a few days ago looking for clothing and was surprised at how thin a lot of it was. Same with Old Navy. (Granted, I haven't been shopping for clothing in a long time and wanted something cheapish, so there might be better places to look, I just didn't know where.)

Now if other people want to wear see through tops that's fine, but I would be too self-conscious to do so.

Re: Complainging you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've just never had this problem? I have never had problems finding not-thin tops at places like Target. Maybe it depends on what time of the year you shop? Or it could be a regional thing for all I know idk its just never been a problem for me. The see through clothes I own I had to look for.

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It could be a seasonal or regional thing, yea, not sure.

Maybe I'm just unlucky or chose a bad time to shop, or maybe I just need to shop around more.

I rarely see completely see through clothes (instead of just thin tops or whatever) though, so that's a bit different. Maybe they are rare, idk.

Re: Complainging you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe your tops are more see-through than you think. I've had this problem before, where I thought a dark-colored top was fine until I went to the bathroom while wearing it, and certain angles of the light made it completely see through. D:

For the complaint in general, though, thinner tops are actually a widespread thing in the clothing industry because it promotes layering, which sells more clothes. Whether or not you see it yourself, companies have admitted that this is what they are doing.

Re: Complainging you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Especially when there's such an easy way to deal with see-through stuff: just wear a camisole underneath. I own several tops of varying degrees of see-through-ness, so I just wear them with a camisole. Problem solved.

Re: Complainging you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
In summer? When it's 110 degrees F regularly where I live? I'd rather not wear more layers than necessary. I also think it's silly to have to spend more money on more articles of clothing that take up more space in my decidedly small living space just because clothing companies can't be bothered to make shirts with decent material.

(That said, I'm in the middle--I can usually find tops that aren't thin, but I definitely understand this complaint. If I want a plain shirt then it's usually fine, but as soon as I start looking at anything with a cute design on it, it's like everything is half-invisible. Even if it's black. I don't particularly care if people can see my bra, but I've gotten comments about how it's a trashy look, so.)

Long lines on the weekends/lunch breaks, or during big sales; especially big sale weekends. What the fuck did you expect, guys? Empty rooms and check-out counters? Siiiiigh.
