Apps

[personal profile] shortysc22 2014-06-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So I finally joined the party and got a smartphone. What apps do you recommend? I'm not addicted to the phone and only had a basic calling/texting one before.

I know I want Twitter on the phone, which app do you use and do have reasons for choosing it?

Non-Game Entertainment
Netflix, BuzzFeed, Play Music (it's google-based and let me easily get my entire iTunes library to my android phone), IMDB. I have YouTube, but I don't use it often.

Games
Temple Run, Angry Birds, Hot Donut (I downloaded this for my nieces, and it's surprisingly fun).

Communication/News
Twitter, Facebook, BBC (I'd happily take suggestions for free breaking-news based apps, particularly focused on the US).

Lifestyle
Myfitnesspal (food/exercise diary/calorie tracker), HabitRPG (make a list of things you want to accomplish on daily/weekly/whatever basis and you gain experience when you do them and level up or you take hit points when you miss them and eventually die and have to start back over), Houzz (interior design/decoration/room-planning)

Store-specific
Cartwheel (coupon app for Target), Dillons app (coupon/listmaker/points-tracker app for my brand of Kroger store)

thanks! For Twitter, do you just use the official app or is there another one you prefer?

I just went with the official one, yeah. Works OK for me.

Is it an android or iPhone?

Silly me, it's an Android. It's Samsung galaxy S4 mini.

Utility
Free: Evernote (for notes and such), My Data Manager (if you use data this can help you regulate it), if your bank has an app those are useful, Tiny Flashlight + LED, Zedge (for ringtones, wallpapers, etc)
Paid: Swiftkey. It takes it a while to learn how you type, but it is awesome. Also, it might actually be free now on the Play Store as Swiftkey keyboard.

Games:
Free: Compulsive, Robot Unicorn Attack 2, Temple Run 2, Tetris, Word Search
Paid: Plants vs Zombies (I don't like the sequel much but that one is free)

I highly recommend this one
The Amazon Appstore is awesome. They have a Free App of the Day every day (some are bad, some are good, some are amazing). So just check it every day for a free app. Here is the download link because it is not in the Play Store. http://www.amazon.com/gp/mas/get-appstore/android

Funny you mention the amazon appstore because it actually came preloaded on my phone.

I'm trying to see how little I can use data, I'm at home or work most of the day with wifi, so I'm keeping data turned off for the most part.

I think once i get used to the phone a bit, I'll download tetris because I loved that game as a kid.

Perfect viewer (comics), Ringdroid (make ringtones), SwiftKey keyboard (this is a paid app, but I couldn't go back now; it's perfect), Moon + reader (ebooks), Colornote (For, well, notes. I use it a lot, and to make grocery checklists too), Dolphin Browser, Beautiful Battery Disc (self explanatory), 8tracks (free streaming of usermade playlists), Super bright LED flashlight (Also self explanatory), IMDB, tumblr, SMS Backup + (saves your call logs, texts, etc), The Weather Channel App, uh... More, but these are the main ones. Most the others came pre-installed (like Twitter, and yep, I use the official one, and youtube).

If you want games and things I have a few suggestions, but not many.

Re: Apps

[personal profile] shortysc22 2014-06-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks this is helpful! I definitely need to figure out ringtones because I'm used to my old one so much (it was the super mario bros 8-bit theme).

Any simple games you like that don't require being connected to the internet to play? I like tetris/bejeweled.

Re: Apps

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-22 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
The Super Mario Bros theme is great! However I can see why you might want a change. (I change mine...maybe every four months?) Ringdroid is very simple and should work beautifully. I had never made a ringtone before using that app (this was years ago) and I've been using it ever since. Oh! You can also make text alert sounds with it. So it's def cool.

I don't have anything that fits your description, but Organ Trail is pretty simple? It's a parody of The Oregon Trail so if you dug that game and like zombies, you'll like it. The directors cut is a paid app, but I think there MIGHT be a free version.

I also love God of Blades (though that isn't anything like tetris and bejeweled, so idk if you would enjoy it; it's super addicting and fun, though short) but again, it's a paid app. Most the cell games I have are from humble bundles. (Which reminds me, Broken Sword is neat too.)

If you ever decide you want to play online (and if you like RPG's) you should try Pocket Legends. It's a free MMORPG. (I don't play it constantly, but I'll go through stages where I'm addicted to it for a week or two then drop it entirely, lol. It's fun, though.)

I actually don't like change haha, I've had the same ringtone of Super Mario Bros for the last 10-11 years, I just always bought it for my old phones (I also had my last phone for close to 6 years....)

I have a feeling now that I'll be able to create ringtones, I may change more often. I used to have 4 ringtones, one for my close friends/family (The Office Theme song), my best friend (Crank That by Soulja Boy), Super Mario Bros for anyone in my contact list, and then a generic ringtone for anyone not in the contact list. This way I would know right away the speed at which I should pick up the phone. But once I'm able to create ringtones, the possibilities are endless!

I've got the standard set of social media apps on my phone(twitter, facebook, tumblr, instagram and the like), I've also got youtube, comixology, vine and snapchat(recommended to me by a friend but I'm not really sure what exactly you do with it).

I've also got the standard free Angry Birds games plus some utilities apps, like a period tracker(because I am so bad at tracking it myself).

My brother and his friends use snapchat to send pictures to each other. I don't quite get it, but I feel like I will love instagram and twitter on the phone.

Ahaa, I see.

I am really terrible with Instagram, I love it. I'm not even a selfie person really but I just kind of love snapping pictures of my pets or places/things that I think look nice and posting them because I can. I follow/retweet more than I post myself on twitter but I do like it.

I won't lie, I use twitter now to stalk celebrities and find out free events with my favorite bands.

I feel like I will be the same way and not take selfies but just post pictures of awesome places I go, foods I bake and random clothes I buy.

Re: Apps

I'm not sure what you're supposed to use snapchat for, but for a bit me and a friend used it to send silly pictures or short videos (like my Lego Bilbo being startled by my Funko Bilbo) to each other that we knew we'd never bother saving. I knew no one else with snapchat and her coworker didn't either, and I vaguely know him (though we've never talked directly) through her so we all added each other and I'd just get random stuff. One time he randomly sent us a picture of himself with a knife (and a stupid look on his face), so I sent one back but with his tumblr in the background (it was supposed to be threatening, idek), and it went on until he dumped an entire sack of knives onto his bed and sent me a picture of that. I couldn't beat it so I gave up.

Hahahaha, okay that's pretty amazing, from what I've seen of it online I gathered it was just for silly pics but I initially thought that it was a bit like Instagram(where you uploaded the images) but it seems like the images don't save or something? Idk, I've not played with it much.

Re: Apps

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't used it in months (or longer) so it might be different now (though I doubt it), but I think the whole point of snapchat is that you can't save the images or videos that people send you. They show up for a short time and then they get deleted. You CAN use the app to save picture or video, but if you do that you need to share them outside snapchat. It's weird. Guess it would be good for sexting (LOL)? (Maybe that's what people use it for, I genuinely don't know.)

Re: Apps

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-06-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Lets face it even if it wasn't intended to be used for porn, it will at some point be used for porn.(Actually tbh if the photos really do get deleted unless you save or upload them somewhere else it probably is pretty handy for sexting... and now I have a mighty need for snapchat sexting fic in all my fandoms, haaaaaaaaaa.)

Games: Temple Run 2, Tetris, Candy Crush, A few riddle/brain teaser apps, Jewels Star [free Bejeweled knock off], The various Zombies Run! apps, a couple Choice Of games, Ingress

Other: Dice Roller [I have a bad habit of forgetting my dice on D&D night], bank app, mirror [It has a light, plus I don't actually own a mirrior that isn't attached to my bathroom wall], backgrounds, Podbay [tons of podcasts are on it, for free], Flipboard [news app].

I use Current for news on my tablet [which I use more in general] since it actually gives you a lot more control over the news you want to see [generally by category] where as flipboard is just kind of whatever the people running it decide to put up there.

any particular riddle/brain teaser apps you like?

Re: Apps

There aren't any out there that I'd say are the best ever - usually they only come with a set number that never changes - but Traditional Riddles has a good number of riddles if that's specifically what you're looking for.

TalkTo. It allows you to text businesses questions and get answers, which is awesome for when they don't have a site or don't answer their phone for whatever reason. Or if you just don't like talking on the phone.

Weatherbug. A pretty accurate weather app. It's handy.
