Grumbling

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-06-21 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to start running in the mornings, to try and get fit. Unfortunately I lack the clothes for it. Specifically a sports bra (I've tried jogging in normal ones, and the girls quite literally fall out) and a pair of trainers (I love my hiking boots, but they're not really designed for running in).

I've got ~£100 in my bank. It would be more, but Zara's little escapade with lungworm, the electricity meter and the lure of a microtransation promo on RuneScape ate about £70 between them.

Said escapade drained my mum's bank accounts as well. It's near the end of the month, so it's not as bad as if this had happened last week, but... for the next week or so, she's going to rely on me to top up the electricity meter and give her some money for fuel to get to work. And maybe do the shopping if my dad moans that there's no food (translation: ready meals, or chicken nuggets/breaded chicken breast fillets/fish fingers and chips/fries/wedges) in the freezer.

I don't know how much I'm going to need for the next fortnight. And without knowing that, I can't go shopping for stuff for me.

Look up sports direct. I got two sports bras that lasted me until I lost them for £12.
And look up Kalenji trainers. Mine cost £10 and are projected to last another 6 months of Parkour.

Question - do you really need these things to start running? Or can you start now and in a week or 2 (or whenever you get money again) buy the shoes and bras?

When you start running, are you honestly going to be spending large periods of time running? Or are you going to do the 3-minute-walk-1-minute-run thing? Can you run braless? Are your boots too heavy to run in at all?

I don't know your boobs, your feet, or your endurance level - if you're one of those people who thinks they're out of shape and then immediately goes for three-hour runs, AND you have Boobs of Doom, yeah you need decent bras. But I kinda wonder (and this me being the devil's advocate here) if this is a reason not to start running right away. I want to say "all you need to start is motivation!" but I have no way of knowing if that's as true for you as it was for me. You very well might need to buy stuff before you even think about starting.

Do you walk (for exercise, not as a part of daily life) right now? Can you walk in normal bras and your hiking boots? For the next few weeks, can you up your walking speed instead of running, if you absolutely need sports bras and proper shoes to run?
