I am just so very fond of all of the non-villain characters. Especially Hawkeye and Mustang (who have hit my "I need to write fic for these two" button hard, but I am resisting until I finishsome other WIPs), but I don't think there's anyone who gets more than an episode or two of screen time and doesn't make me go, "I would like to see more of you, yes." Everyone has their own goals and I love how they conflict and intertwine and that everyone achieves some degree of success and happiness by the end. I love the worldbuilding and the level of thought that clearly went into the mechanics of alchemy and how it fits into society, and that alchemy is portrayed as something anyone can do to some degree with a little study as opposed to a superpower.

Basically, I just have so many feelings and all of them are positive.

I pretty much agree with all of this. Rich, complicated characters, none of the which are 100% good or bad, and awesome worldbuilding. I do like a couple of the villains, though. Envy is a favorite and so is Greed. I do love Mustang and Hawkeye and I ship Ed with just about everybody ;) My absolute favorite character is Al.

I like some of the villains too, especially Greed (and I am totally planning on crocheting a little Envy-in-a-jar the next time I have green yarn left over from something), but I don't like them across the board the way I do the heroes. And I saw the 2003 anime first, and the homunculi are the one element that I think that one did in a more interesting way (although the big bad in Brotherhood is so much better), so I found it difficult not to have that comparison in the back of my head.

I can totally get behind having Al as an absolute favorite. The way he defaults to calm and kindness makes him stand out among the other characters, but he's never treated as less competent or capable than the rest of them just because he's gentle. And I love the way the art makes him so expressive despite him not actually having expressions.
