Well, to play Devil's Advocate, it may not have anything to do with the author's sense of self-worth and a lot to do with how the character being written usually behaves in canon. Some characters in media make casually sexist remarks all the time. It wouldn't be strange for a character who exhibits excessive machismo in canon to disparage teenage girls; that in itself could be played straight or challenged in a fic, but first and foremost, it must be in-character.

True. Except the characters I'm substituting for don't (in canon) make blatant sexist comments or disparaging remarks about teenage girls. So, for my fandoms this is coming from the writers. And...the phrase happens way too often. It's a cliche. It's a lazy, misogynistic, annoying cliche.

If you read fanfiction, you will see it everywhere now like a blue MINI Cooper. I'm sorry. :)
