Maybe the OP needs to realize that everyone has their hobbies and their interests. I have a nice little career but I do spend some of my freetime playing around with fandom.

It sounds more like insecurity on behalf of the OP, which is hardly uncommon in younger fans. I was one once, too. I remember.

I dunno, perhaps it's better with the older-older fans, like the ones in their late twenties. If you ask me, some fans in their early 20ies, like 21-24 are pretty goddamn pretentious about everything fandom- they claim "write" better, they "understand characters" better, etc, etc, *insert more BS here*

Age really has very little to do with anything once you hit the 17-24 range- if you're a dumbass, you're a dumbass, and if you're good, then you're good. I just hate it when "older" fans think they're so sophisticated, when only 3-4 years ago, they were just the same. It's like the highschool "seniors" picking on the "freshmen" all over again.

As for the cancer comment- if you're dumb enough to take that seriously, then... my god. I think the OP meant it more as a "if you're really as great and wise and old as you say you are, wtf are you doing in fandom?" Which I really agree with. Fandom is a pretty sad thing, I think...

because obviously the only way to change the world is to cure cancer. it certainly would never come through educating ignorance in the world by good works and calling attention to the political and sociological ills of the world through writing about current events of the day.

...didn't we just have wank about this and how just because people aren't out blazing trails that doesn't mean they aren't doing something with their life and how a bunch of anonymous strangers on the internet can't possibly be in any position to judge other anonymous strangers on the internet?

You can do something great with your life and still have a hobby such as fandom. Just because you're successful doesn't mean that you dedicate every moment of your life to that career.
