I don't know, Waking Life is about on par with Memento for dramatic weirdness, in my opinion.

Granted that rotoscoping isn't exactly the same as traditional animation - it's tracing over frames of recorded live-action - but it produces a final product that's frequently compared to traditional animation. There's a rotoscoped Lord of the Rings out there too (the Rankin-Bass one), and I don't think anyone can argue that LotR is "fluff."

OP might want to expand their horizons a bit more.

Actually, the Rankin-Bass one is traditional animation and covers Return of the King (they're also the ones who animated The Hobbit). The rotoscoped one was directed by Ralph Bakshi and covers Fellowship and Two Towers.
