What are some unusual things that give you terrible second hand embarrassment?

There was a con recently which had some actors from Captain America at it answering questions/signing autographs/taking pictures. And I get so embarrassed watching them answer questions at their panel! I used to love watching SPN cast panel videos on YouTube. I am sort of okay if I just listen to the video but watching it just makes me cringe.

Also, seeing pictures from the fan photo ops make me super cringey as well. I think it is because I am projecting how terrified I would be to ever meet a celebrity onto them.

What about you?

Fan photo ops usually give me second hand embarrassment too because I've seen one too many photos where the fan is like super excited or awkward like an over eager puppy and the actor/singer/celebrity is all dead eyed and barely working a smile. They are just in it for the paycheck.

I feel bad for the fan.

Mind you, there are plenty of con photos where it looks like the actor is having just as much fun as the fan. Usually those are the photos where everyone is doing something odd ball.

Even when the actor looks like they are having fun, I feel bad for them. They are getting paid but damn it must suck to try to keep that level of enthusiasm up all day.

Q and As only give me second hand embarrassment when people ask stupid questions or argue with the person answering.

I actually love Q&A, and have done some photo ops wit celebrities. I just sotra hate how I look news to them. It's weird

Did you mean look next to them? I think I might enjoy it better if I was there but I am always terrified a fan is going to ask an awkward question (SPN fans seem to be terrible about this).

Oh my god, yes. All those things make me cringey as well. I'm also embarrassed and afraid to watch anything with an actor I like where they are out of character-- panels, interviews, bloopers, Twitter, etc. I didn't used to be like this. I've been to events with celebs present and it's just as cringey being there as it is watching vids. I always block out my celeb encounters because I get super embarrassed thinking about them.

Glad it isn't just me! Though, some actors I am fine with watching! Like, I loved most of the Avengers and XMFC press junket stuff. But the Captain America stuff just ehhhhhh. I think because the first video I saw of Sebastian Stan was him on Chelsea Lately and it was just so awkward (her fault) so now that is what I anticipate.

Some photo-ops I think are cute, even if I would never do one myself(I'm too scared to meet any celebrity/actor I like). But I feel you on the panels, like some I can watch and it's not that bad but most of the time I just don't bother because it's far too easy for it to fall into cringey territory for me.

I'm fine with looking at gifsets of them though? Which I don't quite get but there you go.

Re: -_-;

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-06-22 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes! GIFsets are MUCH easier for me to handle. There were actually a couple of videos I sort of wanted to see but I just waited for the GIFsets (that I knew were going to [and did] come out).

I get really embarrassed when a newspaper or magazine prints something in the letters to the editor section that was written by a little kid. I'm still embarrassed when I remember the letters I wrote that (thankfully) didn't get published, and I can't imagine anyone else not growing up to regret their own kid-letter.

Do they post their names too? D: I have never written into anything like that (though I recall DBZ magazines that had them).

Re: -_-;

...Which con, btw? I don't think I saw those videos. (And now I want to.)

I think, like in your case, it kind of depends on who's being interviewed and for what. Back when I was in SPN fandom I watched ALL the videos, but by the time Misha joined the cast and started going to cons it was harder for me because Misha doesn't even need fans to ask embarrassing questions; he can say outrageous things on his own. LOL.

Then again, James McAvoy can bring up dick joke after dick joke and it just feels ~natural~ to me. Maybe because he seems so down to earth and enjoys himself so much? IDK what the difference is.

I like fan photo ops when the actor looks like they're enjoying themselves. If they look like they want to be anywhere else then I can't look at them.

Philly Con. This person has been reblogging a bunch of stuff. http://fyeahbucky.tumblr.com/

And yeah, it depends on who it is, who is interviewing, and the chemistry between the two actors being interviewed (if there is more than one).

Almost nothing irl? I almost ALWAYS get really bad secondhand embarrassment from television shows of all things. It's one of the reasons I really never got into Friends or Seinfeld or other situational comedies like that... I just couldn't handle the cringe factor.

In real life I'm never invested in what other people (strangers) around me are doing enough to suffer the same.

Have you ever seen Louie? That show...*shudder* It doesn't help they have those like moments tha are super quiet. Blech.

Re: -_-;

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
when i'm at a con i love going to the panels and i don't usually get secondhand embarrasment unless it's a really bad question, but i hardly ever watch videos of the panels i wasn't at.

i have loved looking at some of the different photo ops with sebastian stan because i read lots of stories about how nice he was to meet. i love reading stories like that. i've meet a couple celebs through photo ops but idk if that changes me views on them

I think it is just the fact I would be super embarrassed to meet a celebrity. I have no clue why either! I guess I just don't know what I would do.

OMG I feel you on the interviews. I'll watch some cast interviews from Revolution and I always cringe when it's fan submitted questions. Please don't.

Aww, I've met some celebrities and they've all been super sweet about photo ops and made me feel super comfortable.

Fan submitted questions are the WORST sometimes. Especially from twitter/tumblr. It is like people with no sense of tact converge on those sites.

I only get that kind of feeling at panels when people ask stupid questions and embarrass themselves. Every once in awhile a TV show will cause it.

Re: -_-;

I have had some shows do that as well. The most recent was probably Fargo. There were some really cringey scenes.

Seeing some of the fan Q&A's where they ask about shipping and stuff like that always makes me cringe.

But other than that, it takes a lot for me to suffer second hand embarrassment.

I haven't listened to the most recent Welcome to Night Vale episode because all the screaming in the background makes me cringe. I listened to the first five minutes and it wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be, but I'd much rather have it without the audience.
