What songs did you or someone you know/encountered not realize were about something else?

Apparently "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum is about a booty call. According to TV Tropes anyway (so they may not be the best source). I... thought it was about exes who missed each other. O_o

Not me, but I came across a YouTube fanvid with Hermione scenes from the HP movies to "Out Tonight," because, as the YouTubber put it, "she gets rebellious." It was kind of obvious she didn't understand what the song was really about...

LMAO, is that the same "Out Tonight" from RENT? Please tell me Hermione wasn't getting tied up at the Cat Scratch club too...

That reminds me of someone who did a fan music video about Éowyn from Lord of the Rings, and they used "Black Balloon" by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Just... *facepalm*

Black Balloon??! That's, like, the last song I'd use for a LoTR vid.

We used to tease one of my friends about Relax and The Reflex.

When I was young a girl I knew staged a melodramatic, sobbing exit from the school gym at a dance because the song playing "reminded her of her grandfather". It was Meatloaf's "It's all coming back to me now".

My dad didn't get it when I joked recently about Katy Perry's new "Birthday" song getting played at a bunch of clueless kids birthday parties.

Why do you think the kid you knew "staged a melodramatic, sobbing exit" because the song reminded her of her granddad? Sometimes if you're mourning, the smallest things set you off. One time, after my mom died, I started getting emotional over a stupid Kesha song just because it had the words "die young" in the lyrics.

I can't listen to Bryan Adams' "Summer of 69" without tearing up a little because it's what happened to be on in the background when I found out a very close family member of mine was dying.

People make associations that aren't obvious to the outside observer all the time.

I read an article about good summer songs, and it mentioned "Hot in Here" (or whatever the title is - "it's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes.") Sadly the writer didn't seem to be being ironic. I have no idea hwo they were that naive...

Hot in Herre. And I think it's a hella good summer song. In fact, I'm going to a party this weekend and requesting it.

It is, but the person thought it was about being hot in the summertime. They somehow missed the part with the female singer, I guess.

People seem to not listen to the rest of the lyrics and think it's a cheerful song. I have encountered that so many times...

But it is a cheerful song! Sure, it's about dying, but that doesn't mean it's not cheery.

When I was a little kid I thought I Touch Myself was about a person touching her hand to her heart or something every time she thought about the person she liked.

That's hilarious.

That reminds me of the scene in that one episode of Buffy when Willow figures out the meaning of that song.

Because of radio edit, I didn't realize what the hell Semi-Charmed Life was about until years later.

I used the lyrics to that song in a high school project. Not the radio edit. About a year later I figured out the drug references and thought, yeah, even without them it wasn't an appropriate song. I still cringe when I think about it.

So many people seem to just not get that 'Every Breath You Take' is essentially a stalking song.

And I didn't realize until recently that Sarah MacLaughlin wrote 'Angel' based on somebody going into drug withdrawal.

Didn't Sting even say that? In some interview after a wedding season of it being the biggest wedding/first dance/whatever song? He was utterly baffled, as I recall.

it surprises me how many people think "Imaginary Lover" is just a love song. it's obviously about masturbation, listen to the lyrics!
