The valedictorian of my high school dropped out of college and is now a short order cook. The guy was a major asshole so I'm not too sad for him, but I'm kind of sad about the wasted potential. He was a smart asshole.

I should feel bad when people shoot themselves in the foot. I just don't.

Is he unhappy as a short order cook?

If it's just where he wound up by default and he's miserable, struggling and regretting his decision, then yeah, that's pretty sad. But if he's getting by all right and happier there than he'd have been in whatever career he'd have gone into with a degree, I see no problem.

Also, is he still an asshole? Some do eventually grow up and get over themselves.

I'm not sure. I only know because I looked at his facebook profile when he joined our reunion planning group. He's kind of whiny, but he doesn't seem as insufferable as he used to be.
