Well, though GRRM's prose is really flawed, I'd say the books are much better than the show. The show has taken away character depth from practically everyone, has fallen into a predictable formula, has deviated a lot from the source material, is getting progressively more misogynist and I swear season 4 had pointless sex scenes and boobs in every freaking episode. Not to mention enough graphic, exploitative rape to make you shudder in disgust. I'd recommend giving the books a try, though it sounds like you're not one for grimdark, which the series generally is. But it has interesting subversions of character and fantasy tropes and really great female characters.
