Okay I have to ask, because I've seen her books for ages -- what's so bad about the wiki pages?

i've blocked most of it out, but I do remember child abuse, incest, a child's body being stored in a wardrobe for a really long time.

Which book was the whole child's body in a wardrobe thing?

I can't remember if it's Petals in the Wind or If There Be Thorns but there's a point where Cathy is in their mom's old room in the manor and smells something musty and discovers a secret room with a terrible-smelling chest that's strongly implied to contain Cory's remains.

I once saw Flowers in the Attic in the teen section of a bookstore and I blanched. I mean yeah, I read it at about 12, but I'd also been reading Stephen King/Anne Rice et al from about 11. In general though, those books are NOT for impressionable teens.

There's incest everywhere, rape, abuse, infanticide (or whatever the 6/8 year old word for that is), lying to your kids to make them think they're perpetually a certain age because of past rape/abuse/trauma...

It's just a big ole pile of WTFBBQ all over.

Flowers in the Attic is a teen book in the sense that you read that shit in the utmost secrecy when you're a teen. Sitting there like any other book for teenagers? Um, no thanks.

I work at a public library and for several years Flowers in the Attic was on the high school reading list.

When I volunteered at my local library, Flowers in the Attic was always proudly displayed in the YA section.

... I'm a bit scared by that. Unless they were purposely using it as a demonstration of "THESE ARE ALL VERY BAD THINGS. NO. JUST NO." But even then I'm sure there are a ton of better books that touch on abuse/rape/etc that could be used...
