Yeah while I can certainly see Shigure and Hatori with women, Ayame just seemed so gleefully omnisexual (<3 that speech to the Student Council!) that pairing him off with his dress-shop assistant seemed ... unimaginative.

I've always seen people bring up Ayame and Mine(the assistant) as the biggest offense when complaining about Fruits Basket's endgame pairings, but that one was really pretty strongly hinted at from the start, well before Hatori's or Shigure's final pairings were established. (For example, this page - http://www.mangareader.net/282-19885-25/fruits-basket/chapter-47.html - is only from volume 8.)

I certainly understand and agree with some of the complaints, and I would have liked a few more characters to stay single or have vaguer endings, but the fact that Ayame is always brought up first seems uncomfortably like a "he's too girly to not be gay" complaint.

Ah, I do see your point, and it does make sense.

(I only know Furuba from the anime, and from that I liked thinking of him as a charismatic bisexual.)

Same. I still like to think that Ayame and his dress-shop assistant people are kinky types and will occasionally invite someone else in for a threesome.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure both Mine and Ayame would go for open relationships. With the same sex. Then just come home and cuddle up a storm.
