So you didn't get to the part where he wants to mate with his talking horse?

Seriously, the scene with him killing the bullies was pretty fucked up, and I can see why it would have that sort of impact. For what it's worth, I think it was supposed to be horrific.

The thing is, that's not what got to me. It was his mother refusing to take him seriously when he told her about what he was being subjected to. I was bullied pretty severely in elementary school, and among the many messed up things my mother did was assert that I must have done something to draw such a reaction (which was so very much not the case. I am keenly aware of the things people--especially children--will do to each other for no other reason than that they can). So yeah, that was the one time I actually threw a book.

I know how you feel. I was severely bullied in school and my parents were convinced of two lies.

1. that I was exaggerating.
2. that I was following the little shits around.

I have no idea where they came up with these ideas.
