What are you reading FS?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Since the book club is MIA, what is everyone reading/in the middle of reading/looking forward to reading?

I personally have been meaning to start a Pynchon short story collection, and have a dozen things open on my ereader, but haven't managed to read at anything near the levels I used to, when I was younger.

I need to start reading House of Leaves, or at least get pass the 1st chapter. But I keep getting sidetracked by fanfic.

My NaNoWriMo novel from 2010? I'm doing a read through and taking notes so I can start revising.

For real books, I'm reading The Scorch Trials, sequel to The Maze Runner. My friend loves the series and lent me all of them.

Currently reading Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, because it was up for a Hugo and a linguistics blog I follow did a post about it (the author did some really interesting things involving the intersection of social gender and grammatical gender, specifically how someone who was raised in a society with no cultural or linguistic marking of gender would be completely at sea trying to get the correct gender marking once she got out of her own culture bubble). It's pretty good so far, probably about halfway through and the mystery is shaping itself up pretty well. I'm really here for the worldbuilding, so the fact it's actually well written is a bonus.

I'm probably going to pre-order The Rhesus Chart by Charles Stross in the next few days because goddamn I am like in withdrawl from burning through the entire Laundry Files series including short stories in like the span of a month, and now there's a new one yessssss.

The Way of Shadows, by Brent Weeks. Super-powered assassins, the crappy world they live in, and their angst.

I'm reading Fahrenheit 451, because I've started it like 3 or 4 times before and never finished it before. I'm still not as into it as I was for other Bradbury books/stories, but I've gotten farther than my previous attempts.

Buzzfeed posted a list of books to read if you liked The Fault in Our Stars and I have been slowly making my way through that list. Some have been good, others I couldn't get through, but overall, I'm glad I'm reading again.

Haven't chosen a new book yet, but I just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora. It was... not great, to be honest. (Anyone who's read it and wants to discuss I'd be more than happy to though!)

I don't know what to read next :(

Awww, I'm sorry. I thought it was a little sloppy but promising, and that the series improved as it went on, FWIW.

Since I knew it wouldn't be picked for book club, I decided to reread On A Pale Horse on my own.

How is it? Is there any skeeviness?

Well, haven't gotten very far since fic keeps distracting me. Nothing really skeevy so far.

Good to know there's nothing skeevy so far. Hopefully it will stay that way. Mind posting about it when you finish it? Thought about reading it.

Just finished Red Rising which is something along the lines of The Hunger Games. I won't be looking for the rest of the trilogy.

It's the summer reading program at the library, so I'm trying to get something decent to read for my next book. And I'm waiting for the most recent Dresden Files novel, but there are lots of holds on it, so I don't know if I'll get it before the reading program is up or not.

Jim Hines's The Snow Queen's Shadow. I just finished Kathy Reichs's Bones are Forever.

My local Barnes and Noble is closing, so I went and bought a bunch of books on clearance last week. I have the Kite Runner, How to Be An American Housewife, and another that I can't remember at the moment. Not sure which to start first, though to be honest, I'll probably end up binge-reading all three in a day or two as soon as I start one, so I don't suppose it matters much.

The Prestige! It's about two magicians who are complete idiots. At least, that's my takeaway so far.

It was an interesting book, but... I preferred the movie!

I just finished HP - Chamber of Secrets and I think I've delayed Hunger Games' Mockingjay for too long now since I didn't really like the second book but I'd like to finish it before the movie comes out.

Or I might just go on with Prisoner of Azkaban. XD

Black Water: The Book of Fantastic Literature edited by Alberto Manguel. 72 short stories, and every one is just ... amazing. It's taking me forever to get through, because I keep re-reading stories just to pick apart how they're put together.

I have Soon I will be Invincible on order: it was a requested fandom for a Rare Women (I think) pinch hit that flew by a few months ago, and the requestor's prompts and letter made it sound really interesting.
