The one in which your local Defiance!stan reminds you: DEFIANCE IS BACK

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
OK. So the opener was a bit of a handwavey thing of handwaving, but at least there were still notable consequences from the cliffhanger...and some of those consequences for Idrisa are creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy let me tell you. Not sure what to think about Amanda's sudden change in character (I'm iffy--it seems a bit of a stretch to me), nor in Datak's...but the scene between him and Yewll in the refugee/concentration camp was black humour at its finest (or, you know, not-so-finest). Stahma is up to her signature tricks, unchecked by the fact that there's no Lawkeeper, and the E-Rep law enforcement (who have recruited Nolan's former deputy) are pretty much corrupt and/or ruthless. Seems like old St. Louis (AKA Defiance) might have some life left in it yet. I just hope all these loose ends are going somewhere, and it's not just a case of making it up as they go along.

TL;DR: Why are you not watching Defiance, FS?

I'm watching it, but I still have mixed feelings about it.

I love the universe, and the Nolan/Irisa father/daughter thing, but I think the series has some shoddy writing.

I feel like in season 1, they didn't even know where they were going with it. Also I feel like they sort of pointlessly killed off a lot of potentially interesting characters (that really could have had interesting storylines. Don't get me wrong, you CAN kill off characters to make a story better - I just didn't feel it made the story better.

I find the dynamic between Amanda/the new mayor interesting, I hope they're going somewhere interesting with it - as well as with Irisa. But I'm sort of bracing myself for disappointment.

AYRT

Yep yep yep I feel the same way...but I have a soft spot in my blackened little cinder chip of a heart for how good S1 was, so I'm in it for the next few eps, at least. Was disappointed they didn't do the languages as much, this time around; it did feel a lot more rushed, and less well-developed, to me, which is unfortunate. Hope they can get back in the groove from this point on!

This. There were a lot of things I didn't like toward the end of last seasonn but I did/do like the universe and the Nolan/Irisa father/daughter relationship. So I'm still watching, just not too sure about the show overall.

I saw the first half of the Pilot episode but it didn't really pull me in, so when my cable screwed up and I couldn't go on, I didn't go to any efforts to watch it. But when I saw an extended commercial for it the other day, it looked kind of interesting. I've been thinking I might check it out.

Because I haven't finished season 1 yet.

Oh jeez, I am extremely worried about Irisa :-\ I actually swore out loud at that scene in the car towards the end.

I'm mostly just intrigued at where everything is going, the different character arcs. Amanda seems quite, um, broken (and dammit, I want confirmation one way or another about Kenya!). Datak is definitely broken but I'm not too upset about that. Yewll is still intriguing. Rafe is going to be an interesting one to watch this season - I'd like to see him sort of leading a rebellion. Wondering if the kid who survived is going to be a new recurring character. Wondering if Christie knows what the Tarrs are actually doing for a living or not. Speaking of the Tarrs, I have to admit I really like Stahma actually giving Alak the straight talk. Frustrated that Tommy appears to be going along with the E-Reps, although it doesn't look like he has a lot of choice :-\ And I want to kick the new mayor in the groin.

Did you watch the minisodes?

I almost forgot it was on until I checked my DVR and realized I had a new episode recorded. I had mixed feelings about season one (loved some of it, some of it was decidedly 'eh') but I'm at least interested to see where season two goes. Honestly I probably need to rewatch some of the later episodes of season one because I've forgotten half of what happened last season, it seems so long ago.

I'm just finishing S1. I like it for the most part, but I feel like I'm getting into something with a major subplot that I don't care about at all what with the ~artifact of Doom~. And the Rosewater sisters are boring as hell; Kenya was at her most interesting with Stahma but 1.11 just sort of gave it a very pat ending. I'm cool with the Tarrs being deliciously manipulative, and even Stahma revealing she was doing it deliberately to manipulate Kenya, but it should have been a scene with more impact.

All the aliens are the most interesting characters, although I do like Tommy and Irisa's friendship/romance stuff pretty well.

I did read the AV club review, which did make it sound interesting, though I think Dominion is going to get the "new show to check out" spot on the DVR.
