It might be useful to examine what made each character emotionally unhealthy, though. Were female characters usually angsting over guys? Did they have any other reasons for being unhappy other than "I'm not with the dude I wanted to be with"? Do the male characters have a wider range of reasons to be unhappy or unstable, or were they also frequently angsting over not being with the girl they wanted to be with?

I don't think excuses can be made because everyone was unhappy, so it's okay for Buffy to never experience what it's like to not be mooning over a guy.

Ok, I never finished watching Buffy, but from what I remember:
Buffy angsted about hell of a lot. She angsted about her mom's death (legitimately), she angsted about her younger sister, she angsted about being brought back to life unwilling, a lot about Angel (boy vampire; terrible relationship), and generally a lot about boys.

Out of the guys, Angel angsted a lot about Buffy, and a lot about, well, everything. That was kind of his character, angsting about shit.
Spike angsted over the girls in his life quite a bit.
Oz... didn't angst much, iirc, but then he became a werewolf.
Pretty sure Xander angsted a bunch about girls, too. He had more than one relationship drama.

Anya angsted about guys a lot, in a vengeful way, but that's kind of her point as an ex-revenge-demon. I will forever ignore the end of Anya and Xander's storyline. Nope, didn't happen.

Faith didn't so much angst about guys as just have a bunch of unhealthy relationships with them.

Willow... I don't recall much. She turned gay and then angsted about girls a lot.

I mean tbh, there was so frickin' much to angst about in this show that I personally didn't feel like it was just the girls. Everybody had lots of shit happening, but yeah, there was a lot of general relationship drama for sure.

I will point at both Spike and Angel. Good God, they had relationship problems out the wazoo.
