Re: TIL you can't do certain jobs if you were ever treated for a mental illness.

I think it's the specific au-pairs-summer-camp-employees-from abroad program.

Hmmm, I was unaware there would be people from other countries who would want to work the summer in the US as a summer camp employee or that there were even laws about it.

At this point I'm not sure if it's a law or people covering their asses.

Hmmm, if it was a policy of a company it would have to be a small company... I would think. How large is it?

I don't know, actually. Not sure I kept it was a bookmark.

Now I also wonder if an employer can ever request your medical record.

No.

Some jobs - yes.

Especially medical field jobs. There are certain (physical) illnesses that you don't want people who are already sick to be exposed to (like TB).

Re: TIL you can't do certain jobs if you were ever treated for a mental illness.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's likely the latter, because there's currently no law in the US as far as I know barring anybody from having a job due to mental illness (American talking here). Obviously as you pointed out, certain jobs that have solid ground for refusing somebody with certain mental illnesses, but there's no federal law (and as far as I know, no state laws) barring people with mental illnesses from the job market.

So yeah, probably covering their asses from lawsuits.

When I was at girl scout camp we had counselors from Scotland, Ethiopia, Russia... I figured there was some kind of program for it.

Really? That sounds super cool. I wish when I was a Girl Scout we had that.

We did at the resident camps, in the mountains. Especially the second year I worked there, there were tons because of all the political nonsense of the hierarchy shift, it wound up inflicting bad feelings spurned by personal grudges toward on the tried-and-true counselors, but there were always a few kickin' around. As I understood it, they sign up with an agency that finds them summer work, they make a few bucks, then travel the US/Canada/Mexico.

I know a lot of the vendors on the Jersey shore hire summer employees from abroad, there's programs based around it. There are some programs that are not so good that get written up about in the newspapers, which is how I even know about it.

Ah, I see, that's pretty cool. I only knew of such programs for schooling.

It's a huge thing, actually. People from a lot of countries use it as a kind of working vacation. I've worked at a few summer camps and there is always a huge population of people from outside the US. Last camp had Mexico, Jamaica, Australia, Scotland, Britain, Spain, and a few others but I'm blanking on specifics.

Huh, I've only ever seen it in schooling situations. I guess it makes sense to have a work version too.

A lot of the people I've worked with have been teachers doing this on their own summer breaks. I don't know how anyone would fit it into a regular work schedule.

I meant for students but that makes a lot of sense.

Must be, because I have a history of mental illness and have definitely worked at summer camps and in child care - but I'm American so that's got to be the difference?
