Seconding all these three. And I too have the impulse to defend any character who gets bashed -- often, even ones I started out being neutral towards will suddenly shoot way up in my estimation when I see them get bashed, because the bashing just highlights their good points to me by omission.

Exactly. Even if its a character I hate I don't like bashing (such as Snape, for example). I don't get the point of bashing.
