Advice

Not sure if there is anyone around, but I need advice.

So, I've had no luck looking for an apartment. But an old friend has a room free in her apartment. It would be $500 a month, which is half of what most apartments in my area cost. And she's a kind of messy person like me, and we get along well.

The problem is she has a cat. And I'm very allergic. But the lower rent would allow me to be able to pay to get allergy shots. And I haven't found anywhere else.

So what do you guys think? Should I do it?

Would you have to sign a lease/commit to a certain amount of time? Because if not you could always go in while still searching for your own place. It would be a good temporary solution - and hey, if it works out that you're happy there then super win!

Well, I'm only looking for a place for one year because I graduate next May and have no idea where I'll be at that point. But I could ask her that.

Oh, okay, then yeah one year of allergy shots sounds do-able! Depending on severity of allergy and cost of meds and and and, but it does sound like a good solution to your problem if the allergy is the only downside.

Well, the allergy and that I'll have to take two trains to get to school in the morning. But frankly, at this point I'm kind of desperate. And because of past medical bill issues, my credit kind of sucks so none of the apartments I've applied for have come through.

I have a cat, and my friend who is moving in is allergic. One of the things we did was she came up for a week, just to see how bad her allergies were around the cat. Does that sound like something you could do? Stay with your friend for a week?

Also, my friend's room is a cat-free zone, is that something that is possible to do at your friend's apartment?

Yes to the second. We'd already planned on that. The problem with the first is that I'm out of state interning for the summer.

Unless you literally are deathly allergic, I'd say go for it. You don't seem to really have any other options, and if need be, you can hole up in your cat-free zone for 90 percent of your at-home time.

I've lived in this situation, and it's doable. Keep your room as a cat-free zone and keep the place as vacuumed/clean as possible. Keep your laundry out of shared areas so the cat doesn't sleep on it. The question is, how allergic is "very allergic?" Even if you can't hang out with that particular cat, can you expose yourself to cats (volunteer to socialize kittens at a shelter) and see how you do? Have you taken the meds before and do they work well for you?
