Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.

Look, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you've had shitty, soul-crushing time job hunting and as a result it's a touchy subject for you, but I think what you're saying here is pretty pessimistic and rude. Sure, icey sounds like she is was pretty lucky, and being white might have been a factor as well. But for you to turn around and tell assume she only got employed because you thought she was a white man, and then backtrack not effectively at all and while still jeering at her get go when you found out she's a woman - well, it's just not cool. Not cool to icey, and not cool to lots of other people reading this thread who might think twice about stepping out the door and handing out resumes because of your comment.

Sure, there might be workplaces who think you're 'desperate' for asking about jobs in person, but for every workplace that has that attitude I guarantee you that there are ten other workplaces that will be significantly more likely to hire you if they can put a face to a name. On top of that, actually going out and about will allow you to see jobs that might not be advertised online, and if you hand out resumes to places that aren't advertising at this moment you might end up being the first on the list if they start hiring next week, or the week after.

For some additional anecdata, in my social circle the majority of my friends got their jobs either through networking (which, by the way, is statistically the best way to get a job), volunteering somewhere and later applying for a paid position or - surprise surprise - handing out resumes in person or cold calling people. And this is a mix of non white and white women, btw.

TL;DR, icey is giving decent advice here, and you are being destructively fatalistic. There's no need for this attitude.
