Same here, anon (and slightly older).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I only recently started RPing for the first time, and I'm 27.
I'm actually having a lot of fun with it.

If it weirds you out, just don't do romantic / sexual RP?
It's not a requirement.

OP

The thing is I think I'd like that. Just not, you know, with a teenager. But I guess I could practice with non-pairing RP.

There are RPs where you have to be 18+ to apply, just FYI.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Older fandom unite! I've been in fandom since I was 17 and will be turning 29 on Sunday. I felt the same way about trying to keep up with the Sebastian Stan fandom on Instagram. I didn't follow a lot of people back because I'm so old and they're all mostly teenagers. Yikes.

But, if you want to do it, I say try to find some 18+ peeps and get those romance scenes on.

Nah, I think you'd fit right in. At least on dreamwidth, the rp community seems to be mostly in their mid to late 20s. There are some around who are older. I'm nearly 30 myself and the people I play with are in the same age range.

If you go to tumblr, however, the community skews younger so you would run into more teens. The majority there are in their early 20s.

Remember, nobody is going to force you to give your age. You can say you're over 18 for joining games and writing smut, but you're not under any obligation to share your exact age with anyone.

Honestly, no one actually cares.

Got any good recommendations for places on Dreamwidth?

Might help to know which fandom. :)

(also, I am another older RPer. I don't know when it happened but somehow I turned thirty without noticing it. ;) )

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Have anything for MCU? Or even Marvel in the broad sense?

I don't play in games anymore (I prefer to just play things one on one in private sessions); however, some good places to just practice playing your character without joining games are [community profile] dear_mun, [community profile] dear_player and [community profile] bakerstreet. You can also check out current games and players looking for people to play with on [personal profile] app_this_plz.

thanks, you're awesome.

Also, Marvel and MCU characters are extremely popular in dwrp so you definitely have that on your side.

Strongly seconding [personal profile] app_this_plz. They put a post up monthly, and the next one's going up this Saturday. There's a place on the character offerings post to look for one-on-one or small group RP (PSLs and museboxes are the dreamwidth terminology), as well as looking for a game to join if you want a larger group.

If you're looking for one-on-one RP, it does help to give some idea of what you're looking for - romance, action, mystery, a combination thereof, etc - as well as the characters you're interested in playing. Browse the other offerings, too, and hit up people who look interesting - not everything will get off the ground, and you might find your playstyles don't mesh with some people, but it gives you more opportunities to find someone you will gel with. Don't be afraid to admit you're new, either. Dreamwidth RPers tend to assume we've all been at it for a while, but most people are happy to be patient and help someone newer to the hobby learn the ropes once we know you are new (and to be perfectly frank, the people who aren't willing to be patient probably aren't people you'd enjoy playing with anyway).

It might help if you can get some friends to do it with you -- if you don't have anybody in the fandom where you want to play, maybe join a multifandom game where your friend can play a character of their preferred fandom. Even if they don't stick around, you can have somebody to tag with or just to talk about the game until you meet some people in-game & find your feet.

Caveat: I'm not sure of the structure of the kind of game you're going to join, but when I used to do LJ RP it was way easier if I knew somebody else doing it and we could chat about it outside the game.

Jumping in here, as well. I'm 29, and I have been rping for a while, but I have people in my game ranging anywhere from late teens to 30s and up. Married, children, the whole adult shebang. So definitely don't let your age keep you from having fun, OP! DWRP is a big mishmash and I'm sure you'll find somewhere to fit in. :)

If you're worried, though, you might think of starting out with PSL or meme stuff? It's less personal, but it's a good way to just get the feel of things.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
just echoing everyone else at this rate but if you decide to RP here on DW, you'll fit in just fine. the demographic is actually slightly older, it just doesn't feel like it in some spaces because the ones who talk about their lives outside games tend to be the college kids.

the RP community is pretty big on DW, you'll find all kinds of people to play with who likely will accommodate your fandom preferences and play style just fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
honestly, though, how would you know how old the person on the other side is? I've been rping longer than I'd like to admit, and I just don't tell anyone my age. keep it in character and you don't have to worry.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
As another older-RPer, I can say that there ARE games out there that are populated by the, uh, very young. However, there are definitely great games with other players (who tend to be older, though any scan of a wank comm can show you that age is no guarantee of maturity and vice versa!) who would LOVE players!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Reading the ages listed, I'm a lot older than anyone mentioning ages in this thread. I love RP. I often play teenage characters because my most favorite fandom is full of them. I don't advertise my age, and, very rarely, does anyone ask.

I agree totally with the poster who listed the various comms for RP. I've met a lot of interesting people and the characters they play in many of those places.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 26 and have been rping since I was a young[er] thing and...for the most part people won't care too much? I mean, if you start getting weird about ooc [keep bringing it up/hit on the other person/etc] then yeah. It'll be weird [tbf, most of those behaviors would be weird regardless of age].

Also, if you're not interested in doing rp with a huge number of people/have some say in the speed the plot moves you could try one on one rps. Just make sure to note in the ad* you put up that you're going to be on the slow side so that people know that going in.

*There are places on lj and dw specifically for that, iirc, and there is a tumblr for people to put up ads you can check out, and oddly enough, most of the ads on there seem to be from people in the range of 20-26/27.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Me too.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has to start somewhere, OP!

I'm an older RP'er too, although I usually only RP with people that I already know. I just make sure that they're over 18, to avoid any skeevy-ness when it comes to possible smut RP's.

I definitely don't advertise my age though. (I'm over 30.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that you think college kids have much time to invest in rp makes me wonder...

I started RPing in my early twenties. I've been RPing on and off ever since then. I'm in my 30s now.

Also, if you're not confident about romance plots, then simply take it slow. If your partner won't do that, then they're not a considerate RP partner.
