Music in the Grocery Store

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It occurred to me this morning that The Fresh Market pipes in classical music in their stores. And I like listening to classical music so on my way to work now, I wonder if I should make up a grocery store list. I don't think the Super Target has music and that's nice when it's 8 or 9 a.m. and you just want something quick or browse, you don't want the extra distraction. Sometimes I don't pay any attention to the music or other times it's wow it's 80's night at Kroger!

Is there a store you avoid due to the music they play or one you like because of their music selection?

There's no place I go or avoid because of the music. (Except during Christmas time. I hate Christmas music.) But my local Whole Foods has been known to play classic metal like Black Sabbath. I love it when they do that. It's hard not to sing along though.

Now that is an awesome store!

My local PriceRite plays swingin' pop from the 50s! Everyone else plays either a local pop station or nothing, so it's a fun change. I end up dancing down the aisles a little if it's not busy.

I get mildly nervous in large stores (like Target) that don't have piped-in music. Even when there are a decent number of other shoppers they still feel empty and make me feel exposed.

The grocery store I worked at until a few months ago had an...interesting music mix. A whole lotta terrible 70s music -- like, "not even 70s radio stations play this stuff anymore and there's a reason everyone chose to forget it existed" terrible -- and flavor-of-the-month pop several months late, but there was some decent if generic stuff in there along with it. And every once in something would be so unexpected it was a gem. You don't expect to hear "Silent Running" while grocery shopping.

My local pharmacy used to play a Broadway station pretty frequently when the main pharmacist was working, but Jerry passed away suddenly in 2011. There's '50s-'60s pop on fairly frequently, as there's also an old-fashioned soda fountain in the place (it's been in several movies/tv shows, including True Blood) but I do miss the Broadway station and chatting with Jerry about local theatre. He was a good dude.

A friend of mine used to dash into a store every morning before class to get a drink. One morning he got there and his usual stuff was like, out. Just then, Rick Astley came on the PA.

The grocery store that I work at plays a wide variety of music. Some days it's 70's hits, some nights it's club music, some nights it's current pop, and other nights are classic rock. Customers love hearing the wide variety of music, and we get compliments on how we never play the "same old songs."

It's just kind of fun to be working in the aisles and the customers walk by you singing and dancing to hits of the 70's and 80's.

That sounds kind of awesome! I almost never hear music in grocery stores; it's so disappointing.

I've been "caught" singing in the aisles by more customers than I care to count. Fortunately, it usually amuses them.

Several grocery and convenience stores, and one coffee place, in my medium-sized town make a point of blasting Christian rock or praise-n-worship at all times. The convenience store where I used to get coffee and muffins on the way to work even has outdoor speakers so you can't escape the praise.
