Prequel/Sequel/shared universes

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What series could be the prequel or sequel to another series, and/or take place in that same universe?

Re: Prequel/Sequel/shared universes

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The Hunger Games and Firefly. Eventually they used up what was left of the world, so they went onward. It would also explain why some planets are uber advanced and others took a step back in history.

Also, Castle, perhaps? There is that episode with the time traveler... yes it was obviously a joke, but still. Hm.

I submitted a secret years ago about how I was convinced Dr. Strangelove was a distant prequel to City of Ember. I still believe it.

Oh wow, I love this.

Have you read the other books? Book 3 (The Prophet of Yonwood) is an actual prequel, but the details of how "the end" happened are still vague, so it could still work.

I read a fic once where Chuck was a predecessor to Firefly, with Ellie and Casey being ancestors of Jayne, and I'm guessing Chuck and Sarah being ancestors of River and Simon, but it was a WIP that I forgot about until this post. I kind of liked that idea.

It'd be awesome if Mal was a descendent of Awesome (which the fic-writer disposed of in an out-of-character "he's a cheater and gone now" way).

Pretty sure I said this during Shit Stream, but it bears repeating: Phantom 2040 is the sequel to Captain Planet after the villains win.

Also, this has likely been jossed to hell and gone in the games past ACII (which I still haven't gotten around to playing), but Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Assassin's Creed definitely took place in the same universe, and the Immortal was definitely secretly Ezio.

Also also, Carlos from Welcome to Night Vale is a proud survivor of Sunnydale High Class of '99.

I have this inward crack theory that The Hunger Games is actually a Harry Potter AU where Voldemort won the war (or at least they took a lot longer to defeat him), and that's why all of those weird supernatural things happened at once. Some of the Capitol stuff could've been done with magic, by wizards who were trying to make up for what Death Eaters had done, except they became just as bad.

Someone needs to write that fic, actually.

Cowboy Bebop and Firefly totally take place in the same verse. Not sure which one I want to be the prequel/sequel. But Cowboy Bebop seems a bit more futuristic.

Bebop is stated to take place in 2071 (Faye is from 2022) and Firefly is in 2517.

Well there you go. The huge criminal organizations plaguing the universe allowed for the government to take complete control over all the planets (as they got rid of criminals, they became more liked, allowing them to gain more power, and repeat).

South Park and Welcome to Nightvale could place in the same universe.
Tiger&Bunny could easily be same universe, prequel OR sequel to Ace Attorney (if you ignore the in-canon timelines).

There were some Hellboy/Thor(movies) crossovers where the elves/fae from Golden Army were some variation of the Alfheimr elves, I thought that worked quite well.

I would also find it hilarious if all those "supernatural business" canons like Hellboy, Shield , MIB, Buffy, Supernatural, Hellblazer, Warehouse 13, Torchwood and all those existed in the same universe and kept trying to get to the cases first. That would be amusing .

Tiger&Bunny and Ace Attorney? *squints* Yeah no.

Why not?

I am mad that Psych made it so that Leverage and Psych could not be in the same verse. So I am ignoring that moment in Psych and saying they are in the same verse.

I think I've said this before for individual characters, but White Collar and Firefly. Neil Caffrey would be the Tam siblings' great-great-great-great-[...]-great-grandfather.

In its own weird way, the Escape from New York/LA series could be a sequel to the Warriors.

Also, for a while I was convinced that the first two Call of Duty games shared a universe with at the very least Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

As far as I'm concerned, Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star take place in the same universe. I'm nit sure which one comes first, but I'm leaning toward Cowboy Bebop being the prequel.

Welcome to Night Vale, The Addams Family, The Magic School Bus, Doctor Who, and Mary Poppins.

You know Carlos secretly has a huge stash of t-shirts with bad science jokes on them you know he does. And Morticia totally has families in Night Vale. Ms Frizzle? She used to live there! (Some time after abandoning the name Iris Wildthyme - but not her TARDIS, of course. She still hangs out with Mary on a regular basis, too.)

There is no doubt in my mind that Mary Poppins is a Time Lady.

There's a semi-common headcanon floating around that Carlos is Carlos from Magic School Bus, and I can definitely see it as a possibility. Never considered throwing the rest in there, but they do seem to make sense...plus the Magic School Bus itself being a TARDIS would make a huge amount of sense.

Yeah, that's where I picked it up from, heh. I've also seen a suggestion on Tumblr that the Addams' have family in Night Vale, I've had crack!headcanon for ages that Ms Frizzle and Mary Poppins are Time Ladies, and, more specifically, that Ms Frizzle is Iris Wildthyme (THE BUS TARDIS THOUGH). I just sort of smushed all of them together!

The Sherlock Holmes canon and pretty much all the collected works of PG Wodehouse. In particular, my headcanon is that Mike Jackson from the Psmith stories is the nephew (or cousin once removed or something) of Watson (since we know that Mike had an Uncle John, who had been an army surgeon in Afghanistan, and who now spends his time traveling frequently).

Also, Fox Mulder used to be in the BAU with the Criminal Minds people, but that's a little obvious.

I think an argument could be made for Tiger&Bunny existing in the same universe as the MCU, or at least a connecting one. The NEXTs have eyes that glow blue when they activate their powers, and what happens when people are possessed by the Tesseract? Blue eyes. I think it could work.

Alien, Bladerunner and Moon all take place in the same universe (probably at different time periods).
