As a multishipper in this fandom, my advice for you is to stay away. Unless you manage to avoid shipping both of the big pairings involved in the ridiculous ship war, you're going to have a really bad time. Do watch the anime, it's nice and cute, but stay away from the fandom.

Oh no! That's really good to know ahead of time. I just don't understand, Rin/Haru and Mako/Haru seem like they would have such different relationship dynamics, I don't understand why people have to hate on either ship. Some people like salty, some people like sweet, everyone chill out about other peoples' preferences. :\

There's this weird bittereness or something between the RinHaru and MakoHaru shippers and they're constantly being really nasty towards each other and trying to put the other ship down. Like, RinHarus say that Haru doesn't really care about Makoto at all, even as a friend, and calls their relationship codependent, while MakoHarus say that Rin is abusive and that Haru only wants to swim with Rin because he feels guilty, and everyone gets so mad over every single little thing. People get angry and start ranting if the other side squees too much over some piece of official art they interpret in a shippy way. I've tried really hard to just float around and enjoy art and fic of the pairings I like, but the shipwar has still managed to get to me and turned Free!, which used to be a source of pure joy for me, into something that sometimes leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

So if you decide to join the fandom, be very, very careful.

From what I saw from my Reigisa corner of the fandom...it seemed like after ep 5 and 6 the MakoHaru fans got really carried away and started laughing about RinHaru sank. The RinHaru fans seemed frustrated. Things got pretty bad for them after episode 7 and the MakoHaru fans kept mocking them and there wasn't a lot the RinHaru fans could say to defend themselves.

Then after episode 12 all that pent up anger came out because they finally had something to retaliate with and they started gloating a lot and rubbing the MakoHarus faces in it. And ever since then the two groups have been extremely vicious towards one another.

(Things may have happened a bit differently, like I said, I was mostly involved with Reigisa. This is what I gathered from looking at the main Free! tag and what I heard from people I follow in both ship groups.)

I wasn't there when it first aired to see who started it, but no matter which side threw the first burning bag of dog poop, both groups really need to stop now. They're ruining what could be a really nice fandom.

A fandom full of fujoshi is never gonna be a "nice fandom."

I watched the first season when it aired, and I don't get all this drama either. Then again, aside from searching up fanart on Pixiv and reading a few fics, I stayed out of the fandom. It was a really cute, surprisingly interesting show. I have no idea how fans are making it so negative.

I ship both (as well as many other combinations of all the main characters). It's a struggle.

You poor, brave person.
