Inspired partly by Secret 2

I'm trans. And yet, I feel like genderfluidity and really looking at gender as anything other than a "convenient" way to stereotype sexes are some of the most harmful concepts both to the trans community AND the cis community there are.

Because if you're trans, the general public has no problem lumping you in with the ridiculous little brats who all "today I woke up and felt like a boy! Maybe tomorrow I'll feel like a girl!" And if you're cis, it only reinforces the notion that that X is for girls and Y is for boys, and if you don't fall in line, there's something weird about you.

And fuck all that noise.

This is a fascinating article, thank you!

I am actually genderfluid (though I don't label myself as it) and I hate it, but I totally get what you mean and I do agree with you. In fact, I silently judge anybody who says they are genderfluid even though I myself am, because I assume they are just making it up because they do one thing that doesn't fit in with their gender stereotype.

I don't know what I'm really trying to say here, I guess I just mean to say I feel you completely even though I'm in that group of people.

Okay, 1? Gender is an actual thing, not a harmful thing, just a thing. Most people, like it or not, are one or the other, and that's okay. So, no, it's not just "convenient", and it's not just a "stereotype." 2? There is no such thing as a "cis community." It's called "most of the world."

Now, on the other hand, you're trans and that's awesome and completely natural and every other thing. BUT. Don't get your mind twisted about the rest of the world. That kind of mindset is not useful.

Gotta say, the "general public"/ "cis community" are mostly still trying to get their heads around trans as a thing at all, and are not anywhere near knowing enough about tumblr to dump dumb tumblr teens who want to be different in with trans people.

People who confuse genuine trans people and genuine gender fluidity with the worst of tumblr brats are stupid. People who think that a girl being a tomboy or a boy liking bubblegum pop somehow affects their gender identity or sexuality are stupid, whether they oppose or support the cause.

And sometimes you've just got to stop worrying about what people might or might not think based on what other people may or may not be saying on the internet, and just relax. Common sense, compassion, and centuries of history of social progress are on your side. Tumblr teens are like a blip in the ocean.
