I'm too lazy to look up the exact definition, but it refers to basically a co-protagonist. A character whose story is so important to the overall story that they couldn't be removed without changing pretty much everything even though they aren't the central character. If you've ever seen Wreck-it Ralph, Vanellope is a good example.

"Deutero-" means second or secondary, so I'm assuming it's a secondary protagonist.
