I think the other reason people maybe don't like it as much is because the villains are less compelling. The show doesn't really tell the story of the Greek or his organization in any way, only through how the organization interacts with the docks. So from that perspective, I can see how people wouldn't like it as much. But for me, expanding the scope of the show to include the failing industry really drove home the show's message. It helped bring across the idea of the decaying, failing city better, when you can see the remnants of a specific industry and a specific community that used to be there. And, again, I liked the new characters.
